fix(mobile): Android composer and back follow the real keyboard after resume - #21595
On Android, after you leave the app with the keyboard open and come back, the chat composer stays hidden behind the keyboard. Tapping it again does not help. I hit this in daily use, and it reproduces on an emulator.
Cause: on resume, Android first reports the keyboard inset as 0 and then as its real height. react-native-keyboard-controller's native desync repair (KeyboardAnimationCallback.onApplyWindowInsets → syncKeyboardPosition) catches both, but it only emits keyboardDidHide / keyboardDidShow. On the JS side the library only marks the keyboard open on keyboardWillShow (module.ts), and useKeyboardState only listens to keyboardWillShow and keyboardDidHide. So the "hidden" repair reaches JS and the "shown" repair is dropped. useKeyboardState stays on hidden while the keyboard is on screen, and ThreadDetailScreen's KeyboardStickyView enabled={isKeyboardVisible && …} keeps the composer down.
Debug log from the emulator (unfixed main), with a temporary log of the keyboard state on ThreadDetailScreen:
14:54:32 KBDEBUG ctrlVisible=true ctrlHeight=336 sticky=true # composer focused
(Home, then back to the app)
14:54:38.123 KeyboardAnimationCallback: detected desynchronized state - force updating it: 0.0
14:54:38.213 KBDEBUG ctrlVisible=false ctrlHeight=0 sticky=false
14:54:38.852 KeyboardAnimationCallback: detected desynchronized state - force updating it: 336.0
(no JS update follows; keyboard is on screen, composer stays under it)
The same blind spot affected Android back. The back handlers checked React Native's cached Keyboard.isVisible(), which can stay stale after a resume, and neither Keyboard nor TextInputState can see the chat composer, which is a custom native EditText.
Change
Extend the existing react-native-keyboard-controller@1.22.7 patch: treat keyboardDidShow like keyboardWillShow in module.ts, and add it to useKeyboardState's events (in src, lib/module and lib/commonjs). The native repair to "shown" now reaches JS. This is also a fix worth sending upstream.
New dismissOpenKeyboard() helper. It uses KeyboardController.isVisible() and KeyboardController.dismiss(), which track the IME natively and see the composer. The thread back handler, thread search and pull request search use it: if the keyboard is really open, back closes it; otherwise back navigates or closes search.
No change to ThreadDetailScreen. Its existing resume quarantine works once the library reports the real state.
Scope and approval
A small, focused fix for a reproducible bug, with the root cause traced through the native and JS sides of the keyboard library. Android-only behavior. No server, contract or iOS change. The library patch adds one listener and one event name.
Verification
Android emulator (Pixel 10 Pro image, Gboard), dev client against an isolated dev server. Repro: open a thread, tap the composer, press Home, return to the app, tap the composer.
Before (main)
After
Stills. Before: after resume, the composer is under the keyboard, even after tapping it again (frames 3 and 4).
After: the composer stays above the keyboard after resume.
Repeated the repro 4 times after the fix, and every run ended with ctrlVisible=true ctrlHeight=336 sticky=true.
Back after the fix: with the keyboard open, back closes it and stays in the thread, and the next back returns to the list. The same holds right after a resume.
vp run typecheck in apps/mobile passes. Lint shows no findings on changed code.
Not verified: a physical phone or iOS. iOS is unaffected, since its keyboard events are not repaired this way, and ThreadDetailScreen only gates the sticky view on Android. No tests added; the change is an event subscription in a patched dependency.
The original "back is stuck" freeze from daily use (blank feed, dead back) is not fully reproduced and may have another cause. This PR fixes the keyboard-state part that is proven.

Back on the thread screen and in thread and pull request search only
dismissed the keyboard while React Native's cached Keyboard.isVisible()
was true. Android can drop the hide event when the app is backgrounded
mid-hide, so the cached value stayed true and back stopped navigating.
Back now dismisses only when the keyboard is visible and a text input is
focused, and otherwise navigates or closes search. A thread screen opened
after such a resume now starts with its keyboard state marked suspect, so
the composer is not offset by a keyboard that is not there.

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a small, self-contained Android keyboard-state bug fix affecting back handling and composer layout quarantine. Real keyboard dismissal remains intact, while stale cached state can no longer block navigation or leave the composer offset after resume.

Walkthrough
Android keyboard state tracking now processes keyboardDidShow events. Thread search, pull-request search, and workspace back handlers use a shared helper to dismiss the keyboard before closing search or navigating back.
The keyboard-controller patch adds keyboardDidShow subscriptions and updates cached keyboard state for the CommonJS, ES module, and TypeScript runtimes.
Shared keyboard dismissal and back handlers apps/mobile/src/features/keyboard/dismissOpenKeyboard.ts, apps/mobile/src/features/home/ThreadListToolbar.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/pull-requests/PullRequestToolbar.android.tsx, apps/mobile/src/features/workspace/useAndroidWorkspaceNavigation.ts
The helper returns whether it started keyboard dismissal and clears its pending state on keyboard show and hide. The back handlers use that result to close search or navigate back only when no dismissal starts.

Explanation
The title names the Android composer and back-handling fix after resume, which matches the main change: keyboard-state handling via keyboardDidShow and dismissOpenKeyboard() in the thread and PR toolbars. It is a conventional commit title in plain language and is specific enough for a teammate scanning history.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes stay within the keyboard-state and dismissal defect in #22484. The keyboard library patch adds keyboardDidShow handling to the cache and to useKeyboardState, which is the stated defect. The new dismissOpenKeyboard() helper is the only dismissal path added. Its callers are the thread back handler (ThreadListToolbar), thread search and pull request search (PullRequestToolbar.android.tsx), and useAndroidWorkspaceBack. Each caller previously checked Keyboard.isVisible() or called Keyboard.dismiss(), so each change is a direct update of the same dismissal path. The PR description links these changes to the stale-state blind spot. ThreadDetailScreen is unchanged. The Chrome-first composer visibility issue, which the issue excludes, is not addressed by the changes. Server, contract, and iOS code are not changed, per the PR description. The back-handler behavior change goes beyond the listed issue text, but it sits on the dismissal path that the issue names. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template closely. It has Problem, Change, Scope and approval, and Verification sections, and it includes a Fixes #22484 reference. The Problem section gives the cause, reproduction steps, and a debug log. The Change section names the library patch, the dismissOpenKeyboard() helper, and the unchanged ThreadDetailScreen. Verification gives before and after evidence, the emulator setup, typecheck and lint results, and what was not verified. Scope and approval is the weakest section. It describes the change as a small focused fix but links no triaged bug issue or maintainer approval comment, and it does not explain how the issue (#22484) was approved for scope. The template requires that link or a maintainer-approval explanation, so the section is incomplete. The approval link is missing, while the rest of the description is complete.
Resolution
Complete the Scope and approval section. Link the triaged bug issue (#22484) and include the maintainer approval comment for this direction and scope. If no maintainer approval exists, explain why this qualifies as a very small, focused fix of an obvious bug without a prior issue or discussion. Also confirm that the library patch is focused configuration of an established capability or that it is an approved bug fix, and state why its effects stay within that capability.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #22484 has three coding requirements. (1) Cache consumes keyboardDidShow: the raw summary says module.ts treats keyboardDidShow like keyboardWillShow and updates cached state in both CJS and ESM builds. This is supported. (2) Mounted useKeyboardState consumes keyboardDidShow: the raw summary says the hook subscribes to keyboardDidShow in addition to keyboardWillShow and keyboardDidHide. This is supported. (3) After keyboardDidShow at height 376, both consumers report visible with height 376: the summary does not show that the shown handler stores the event height. Not established. (4) KeyboardController.dismiss() does not resolve until the native hide event: dismissOpenKeyboard() sets a pending flag and clears it on both show and hide events. The summary does not show that the underlying dismiss() promise waits for keyboardDidHide, and clearing on show is not the same as waiting for hide. Not established. The PR description says no tests were added. The test-only commit cited in the comments summary is not part of this PR's diff. Also, the PR description names a 1.22.7 patch, but the summary shows patches/react-native-keyboard-controller@1.22.8.patch. This version discrepancy is not resolved. No repository read tools were available to inspect the patch hunks, so the height and dismissal semantics remain unverified.
Resolution
Inspect the hunks in patches/react-native-keyboard-controller@1.22.8.patch for the module-level keyboardDidShow handler. Confirm that it stores the event height (376 in the issue case) in the cached state and the hook state. Inspect the dismiss path in the patched library or in dismissOpenKeyboard() to confirm that the pending dismissal does not resolve before keyboardDidHide. Confirm the library version the PR patches, and reconcile it with the 1.22.7 reference in the PR description. Automated test evidence for these behaviors is absent from this PR, so confirm whether the issue requires it.

When the app returns from the background with the keyboard open, Android
first reports the IME inset as 0 and then as its real height.
react-native-keyboard-controller's native desync repair handles both, but
emits only keyboardDidHide / keyboardDidShow. Its JS state and
useKeyboardState only treated keyboardWillShow as "open", so the repair to
"shown" was dropped. JS stayed on "hidden" while the keyboard was on
screen, and the thread composer stayed under it.
Patch the library to treat keyboardDidShow like keyboardWillShow. The
back helper now reads KeyboardController.isVisible() and dismisses through
KeyboardController, because RN's Keyboard and TextInputState cannot see
the native chat composer. This replaces the earlier TextInput focus check
and its ThreadDetailScreen change, which relied on the same blind spot.

Filed #22484 to track the remaining keyboardDidShow cache/hook defect and linked this PR as the existing fix. I independently observed the same native recovery sequence while investigating Android split-screen in Harbordex, then reproduced the JS state and dismissal failures against upstream 7e289ae1.
Regression coverage is available as a test-only commit, including the mobile React-test allowlist entry. It can be cherry-picked independently of the verification patch commit, which adds the same event subscriptions proposed here.
The tests exercise the real package source cache and mounted hook with only native bindings mocked. From apps/mobile:
vp test run --project react src/features/keyboard/keyboardControllerState.test.tsx
All three fail on the baseline and pass with the listeners added:
didShow without willShow updates both cache and mounted hook to visible with the reported height.
dismiss() remains pending until didHide, instead of resolving immediately against a stale hidden cache.
Normal willShow is still immediate, and didShow supplies the completed height before a later hide resets the state.
Targeted formatting/lint, mobile typecheck, and native lint pass. The existing 18 dependency-patch sections remain byte-for-byte unchanged.
The older fork's split-screen composer failure was verified on an Android 17 tablet emulator. At the time of the initial comment, no current-upstream native UI run had been completed: #20803 and #19980 changed the composer gates since that fork's base. The new tests establish the remaining state/dismissal contract failure. This was initially shared as supplementary evidence and coverage for your existing fix.
Update: a separate, narrowly scoped PR was subsequently requested and opened as #22514, linked to #22484. It contains the state repair and regression tests, explicitly acknowledges the overlap here, and excludes Android Back handling. Native Android split-screen verification against the upstream base now also reproduces the stale cache/hook before the patch and correct state afterward; the composer remains visible in both upstream variants. Details, before/after screenshots, and short native recordings are in #22514 and #22484.

Add focused coverage for the controller-driven Back sequence.
The first Back calls dismissOpenKeyboard() and must not navigate when KeyboardController.isVisible() is true. After keyboardDidHide, the next Back must return false from dismissOpenKeyboard() so the workspace calls goBack(). No existing lower-layer test covers this sequence or the wrapper branch. Add one focused regression test at the lowest appropriate layer.
