🟠 High threads/new-task-project-selection.ts:149
With sidebarProjectGroupingMode set to "repository", auto-balance can return a sibling project instead of the selected path, causing the routing effect to start the draft in the wrong project. scope.projects can include different repository-relative paths, and this loop keeps the first project per environment; filter candidates to the selected project's repository-relative path before choosing one per environment.

Leaving this as is. In "repository" mode the user has chosen to treat every path in a repository as one logical project, so a sibling path on the other machine is the same project under that setting. That is what the grouping mode means here, and it matches the other routing paths:
- Web auto balance builds its candidates in
useLogicalProjectEnvironmentswithderiveLogicalProjectKeyFromSettingsand takes the first project per environment with the same logical key. It doesn't filter by relative path either. - Mobile's manual machine switch (
resolveEnvironmentProjectMatch) also matches on the repository grouping key alone.
Anyone who wants routing to keep the exact path can use "repository_path" grouping. There the scopes are keyed by repository and path, and resolveBalancedProjects only offers that path's copies; the "routes only within the selected project's own group" test covers this. Filtering by relative path in mobile auto balance alone would make it disagree with web and with mobile's own machine picker.

Mobile always started new threads in a shared project on the first environment added, so a quick thread from a phone meant first deciding where it should run. Bring the opt-in Auto balance from web and desktop to mobile: a Load balancing section in Settings > Environments, an Auto balance option in the new-thread machine picker, and the same scoring, eligibility, and pinning rules. The preference levels and provider eligibility check move to client-runtime so both clients share them.

🟡 Medium state/use-composer-attachment-actions.ts:66
Canceling pickComposerMedia leaves the draft pinned to its current environment, so automatic routing stays disabled even though no attachment was added. onAttachmentStart pins before the picker awaits, and this handler never restores auto routing when the result is empty; keep the in-flight pin, but restore auto routing when the operation adds nothing.

This is intended. The pin is taken before the picker opens because the attachment is checked against the machine on screen. Auto balance can't move the draft while the picker is up, and the pin also covers the case where routing becomes eligible mid-pick.
Undoing it on an empty result would mean tracking whether this pick was the one that set the pin. The draft may already have been pinned by a machine, branch or worktree choice, or by another pick still in flight. Restoring routing in those cases would undo the user's own choice.
The state stays visible and easy to reverse: once pinned, the composer shows "on " instead of "Auto balance", and choosing Auto balance in the machine picker hands the draft back to routing.

Problem
On mobile, a new thread in a project that exists on several machines always starts on the first environment that was added. So even a quick thread from a phone means first deciding where it should run. That is the overhead Auto balance (#9895) removed on web and desktop, but #9895 left mobile on manual selection.
Steps (before): pair two machines that share a project, open New thread on mobile and choose that project. The composer says "on ". Settings → Environments has no Load balancing section, and the machine picker has no Auto balance option.
Change
Mobile now has the same opt-in Auto balance as web and desktop. It is off by default, so mobile behaves exactly as before unless a user turns it on.
hostResourcesquery andchooseLoadBalancedEnvironmentscoring as web. The composer says "Auto balance" (or "Checking machines…" / "Auto balance unavailable"). The machine picker has an Auto balance row, so after a manual pick you can go back to automatic routing.Shared pieces moved to
packages/client-runtimeso both clients use them: the preference levels (LOAD_PREFERENCES,loadPreferenceForWeight) and the provider eligibility check (canLoadBalanceToEnvironment). Web's draft routing now calls the shared check instead of its inline copy, with no behaviour change.docs/user/remote-access.mddrops the "Mobile keeps its manual environment selection" note and points to the new setting.Scope and approval
There is no linked issue or Ideas approval. This brings mobile level with web and desktop for an existing, shipped capability (Auto balance, #9895). It keeps the same setting semantics, scoring, pinning rules and composer wording, and it is off by default. #9895 scoped mobile out rather than rejecting it. There is no new routing behaviour, contract or server change.
Related: #17942 (open) adds a per-project default environment and changes the same mobile new-task flow. The two will need to agree on precedence. That PR proposes a pinned default ahead of load balancing, which this change does not conflict with conceptually. #12688 is the web bug where a manual pick makes Auto balance unrecoverable; mobile's picker can always return to Auto balance.
Verification
Real client: Android emulator (Pixel 9, API 37), T3 Code Dev build of this branch. Two isolated servers built from this branch (
--base-dirunder/tmp) share one git repository, so the app groups them as one logical project. The second connection is relabelled "build-box" in the app so the two machines can be told apart. Before (
bf8ffe81a6):New threads open "on wowe", the first machine, and there is no way to route automatically.
After:
Recording:
after-flow.mp4
The recording shows, in order:
In a separate run with both machines at Normal on the same host, the thread went to wowe, which is consistent with equal scores.
With one machine enabled (and Auto balance still on from the earlier run), Settings shows no Load balancing section. A project that exists on only one machine opens "on wowe" with the machine control disabled, the same as before.
Focused checks:
vp run check:changed upstream/main(format, lint, knip, typecheck, tests beside changes): pass.vp test runonpackages/client-runtime/src/load-balancing.test.ts, the mobile new-task selection, new-task flow state, model option and React Compiler coverage tests: 1,056 passed.
