ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This bug fix adds synchronous PNG/JPEG decoding, resizing, and re-encoding to every Claude steer containing eligible images, with documented processing times that can multiply across attachments. The resulting event-loop blocking and shared-server availability impact need additional review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Move image fitting off the server event loop.
When a steer contains several eligible photos, this synchronous call decodes, resizes, and encodes each photo before the adapter offers the message. The file documents up to 1.7 seconds for one 12MP photo. Several photos can therefore delay other sessions for multiple seconds. Run fitting in a bounded worker pool so one steer cannot block the server event loop. The PNG and JPEG library paths used here are synchronous. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…e reads Claude Code stores a steer's images as sent. Once a request holds more than 20 images, Anthropic rejects any image over 2000px on a side, so one oversized paste broke every later request in the thread. Steers now scale PNG and JPEG attachments to 2000px on the long edge before they reach Claude. Fixes #13647 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Note 🤖 Claude Opus 5.5 responding on behalf of Theo Closing in favor of resizing in the client. Decoding and resizing here run on the server's main thread. That stalls every session for about 0.4 to 1.7s per large image, which CodeRabbit and Macroscope both flagged. The replacement will scale images over 2000px when they are pasted in the web and mobile composers, so no server work is needed. The diagnosis and the test fixtures in this PR are still useful for it. |
Pasting a screenshot over 2000px on a side while Claude is working can break every later image read in that thread. Once a request holds more than 20 images, Anthropic rejects any image over 2000px, and the bad image stays in the conversation. Claude Code scales the images of a message that starts a turn, but stores a steer's images as sent. A normal 1080×2424 phone screenshot is enough.
Fix
When a message steers a running Claude turn, PNG and JPEG images over 2000px on the long edge are scaled to 2000px and re-encoded in the same format before they reach Claude. This follows the triage: one fix on the Claude send path covers web, desktop, and every mobile path. Other providers keep the byte-for-byte passthrough.
pngjs(already in the lockfile) andjpeg-js(76KB, pure JS, no deps). Both are inlined into the CLI bundle, so no packaging changes are needed. This rebuilds #13869 on orchestrator V2.

ClaudeAdapterV2.test.tswrites a real 1080×2424 PNG and a 3000×1500 JPEG to the attachment store and sends them throughstartTurnandsteerTurn. Without the fix the steer sends 1080×2424; with it, 891×2000 and 2000×1000, with transparent and opaque corners intact. Turn start still sends the original.vp test run src/orchestration-v2/Adapters/ClaudeAdapterV2.test.ts: 254 passed. Server typecheck, lint, and format on touched files are clean.vp packbuilds with both codecs inlined.Reviewed with sol-loop: 1 round with GPT-6.1-Sol.
