A protocol mismatch previously persisted a saved computer as Off, leaving it disconnected after its host became compatible again.

Keep the saved On/Off choice separate from a temporary compatibility pause. Enabled paused computers retry on Check again, app wake and network recovery; saved explicit Off remains Off, including same-endpoint refreshes while paused. Healthy platform-managed registration refresh behavior is unchanged from main. Preserve saved project scope during a pause, and trust a saved computer's live registry state when discovery metadata is stale while retaining endpoint protocol checks.

Web/desktop and mobile show a one-time, bounded notice for previously switched-off computers. Nothing is enabled without consent; failed or interrupted enable actions remain unanswered for the next launch. Android dialogs queue so startup prompts do not replace one another.

Closes #15051.

Verification

  • Focused suite reduced from 83 cases in six files to 77 in five, preserving all 72 main cases. Five assertions fail with main's behavior. Removed redundant per-helper cases and combined duplicated recovery scenarios.
  • Extended one existing Cloud list component case (ten cases unchanged): stale health previously broke Connected/checked/enabled/reselection assertions; all ten passed in jsdom and real Chromium CI on a166a79, with unchanged test/component bytes since. 77 focused cases pass on 200847c; 87 cases in the verified scope.
  • Scoped client-runtime, web and mobile typechecks, lint and formatting pass. Three fresh whole-diff rounds by Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol; the final round is clear. Fixed stale Cloud row presentation and the post-push finding that paused platform refreshes lost explicit Off. The latter extends an existing test with six direct red assertions, now green, and a one-line fix; native platform reconciliation remains unit-level proof.
  • Real web client plus a second isolated server: incompatible discovery stays On; incompatible retry stays paused; restored compatibility reconnects on retry/foreground/network events; explicit Off survives recovery and reload. Final-head recording uses a proxy that changes only fixture descriptor compatibility and forwards actual HTTP/auth/WebSocket traffic. Foreground/network events were dispatched synthetically.
  • Notice: bounded five-computer summary, no automatic enablement, Keep off persists and suppresses relaunch; Turn on persists enabled choices. Controlled IndexedDB write failure leaves the review unanswered and asks again after reload. Earlier notice/recovery checks used unchanged production code before the isolated presentation/platform fixes; pause/recovery and Keep off were recaptured on head 200847c.

Before — actual main persists Off on mismatch

After — current head keeps On and exposes Check again

After: incompatible computer stays On with Check again

Detailed proof and limitations.

Remaining verification

Human approval is still required. Native Android dialog/input/dismiss lifecycle, iOS, macOS, Windows, Electron desktop and authenticated T3 Connect relay behavior were not run on this head. The Chromium Vitest project could not launch because its headless-shell executable is missing; the actual component ran in jsdom and integrated web proof used T3 Code's separate browser. Welcome/Connect stale-health interaction and saved project-scope recovery have component/state-test proof, not a complete authenticated relay UI pass. No claim that coreldh's particular old relay endpoint is fixed; an actually incompatible endpoint is still rejected.

Maintainer takeover of #19251; original work by @shivamhwp, including credited/cherry-picked work by @vitalyiegorov. Original commits preserved, main merged, no force push and no merge performed.

Models/harnesses: tests GPT-6 Astra; implementation GPT-6.1 Sol; reviews Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Sol, delegated through T3 Code. Primary: GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness.

… off for good

A protocol mismatch persisted the environment into the user's switched-off
list, and nothing turned it back on once the host was updated. Treat the
mismatch as runtime state instead: it pauses the connection without touching
the user's on/off choice, and an environment the user left on reconnects when
a fresh check finds the host compatible.

The switch now only ever reflects what the user chose. A version mismatch
pauses the connection, and paused computers are checked again when the app
returns to the foreground, the network changes, or the user taps Check again.
Settings on web and mobile keep showing the switch as the user left it, and
switching on a paused computer saves that choice.

Older builds switched computers off by themselves on a mismatch, and nothing
records which ones, so web and mobile ask once whether to turn switched-off
computers back on instead of changing them silently.

Approvability

Verdict: Needs Human Approval

Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — This PR changes the connection lifecycle for enabled computers, including persistence semantics, automatic retries, project/readiness aggregation, and web/mobile recovery notices. Its cross-platform user-facing behavior and changes to existing processing paths make human review appropriate.

The switched-off notice marked the question answered before switching
computers on and ignored the result, so a failed write left the computer
off with no error and no second chance. It now waits for every switch,
shows which ones failed, and only records the answer once all succeeded.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Only record the switched-off question as answered when every computer
actually switched on, so an interrupted write is asked about again.

📝 Walkthrough

The change separates saved environment choices from runtime protocol compatibility, updates connection and selection behavior, and adds switched-off environment review notices. It also queues Android dialog requests so requests remain ordered when the host presents them.

Changes: Environment Compatibility and Saved Choices

Layer / File(s) Summary
Separate compatibility state from enabled choice
packages/client-runtime/src/connection/catalog.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/layer.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/registry.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/registry.test.ts, packages/client-runtime/src/connection/onboarding.test.ts
The registry preserves the saved enabled choice when an environment is unsupported and connects only when the environment is enabled and supported. Fresh discovery results update compatibility, and tests cover discovery and retained enabled state.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a166a

Failed attempts to turn computers on can produce duplicate error messages. The change is mergeable with this bounded issue acknowledged or fixed.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a166a

Connection recovery preserves explicit user choices and continues through existing identity and authorization checks. No introduced security weakness was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns Android dialog interruption and recreation behavior, and end-to-end relay recovery.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed recovery authority is scoped to environments already registered in the client. The bulk review can enable all captured disabled non-primary environments after consent, but does not create profiles or credentials. Automatic compatibility recovery operates on saved enabled entries.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Clearing compatibility does not supply an authenticated session. Connection preparation retains profile-to-target identity checks and authorization using expectedEnvironmentId; direct bearer paths require stored credentials, and relay paths use DPoP authorization. The inspected recovery changes do not replace these controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Android retains pre-host and concurrent requests in FIFO order instead of dropping or replacing them. Each outcome removes only the matching queue head before invoking the caller-owned callback, rejecting repeated or stale callbacks for another request. Queue state survives Host unmount/remount within the same JavaScript runtime; this does not establish behavior across process recreation or native interruption.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#15051] requires the saved enabled choice to remain enabled during a protocol mismatch, while the runtime blocks connection attempts and reconnects after compatibility returns. shouldConnect requires both entry.enabled and no unsupportedReason. setCompatibility no longer persists an incompatible entry as disabled, and retry, wakeup, network recovery, and compatibility-clear paths recheck the entry. Explicitly disabled entries remain disabled. The registry tests cover blocked recovery, retries, wakeups, relaunch state, and explicit Off behavior. The update-server cleanup also clears compatibility without enabling an entry.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed settings, mobile rows, onboarding, cloud discovery, project readiness, update-server, recovery notice, Android dialog queue, and tests support the stated paused-computer recovery flow. The notice gives users consent-based recovery for entries that older clients may have switched off. The onboarding and update-server changes prevent unintended enablement. No changed area has a demonstrated unrelated purpose.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

PASS: The description clearly explains the problem, the implementation, scope, linked issue, verification results, evidence, limitations, and model usage. It does not use the template headings exactly, and explicit approval-comment details are not clear, but the required information is substantially present.

…hed host

Covers the discovery change in this PR: once a retry reaches an updated
host, a replayed incompatible health result must not block it again.
Fails against the old rule that re-applied any incompatible result.

Also notes that the switched-off question is temporary.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Check again on a computer the user switched off cleared its version block
without anything re-checking the host, so it looked compatible when nothing
had checked. Only computers the user left on drop the block to retry.

Also says "them" when several computers fail to switch on.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
… needs an update

Main's new rule in the welcome list copied Settings' old check, which
assumed an incompatible computer was always switched off. With the switch
now meaning only the user's choice, Off wins as it does in Settings. Also
updates main's pairing test setup to the new compatibility state.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
With many switched-off computers the question listed every name and the
text ran past the dialog. It now names the first three and says how many
more, and the failure message does the same.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not require unsupported environments to become live before clearing scopes.

An enabled unsupported environment is excluded from enabledEnvironmentIds, so the Sidebar can treat its saved project scope as missing and persist null. Replacing the loop with all enabled catalog entries would instead keep readiness false while that environment remains paused until compatibility returns.

Keep unsupported environments out of project lists, but block missing-scope cleanup while any enabled entry has unsupportedReason. Removed environments will still allow cleanup once the remaining snapshots are ready.

My Android 2.0 / macOS 0.1.0 Stable T3 Connect case (#20416, now tracked under #15051) is still stuck: the saved entry shows host 0.0.45 / “Client not supported,” while the direct descriptor reports 0.1.0 / protocol 2. Notifications arrive, but opening their threads fails at reconnect. The Android recovery work here looks relevant; I noticed the relay path was covered by unit tests only. Is this already-stuck Android + T3 Connect case expected to be covered, and is there a target published build or any specific diagnostic you need? I haven't tested this PR.

Taking over this one for the desktop-app-11 maintainer batch. I will preserve the recovery behavior, reduce the tests to focused regressions, and rebuild the implementation against current main before independent reviews. Thanks @shivamhwp for tracing the persisted version-mismatch problem.

@shivamhwp The takeover is pushed with your commits preserved. The updated body includes main/head web proof and the remaining native/relay checks. The specific old-endpoint report from coreldh is not proven fixed: discovery can lag a compatible live socket, but a relay endpoint actually serving protocol 1 must still be rejected. Please verify that installation's relay endpoint/version and a fresh reconnect separately; this PR deliberately retains that check.

Thanks @shivamhwp for your work on this, including building on @vitalyiegorov’s contribution.

As maintainer, I chose the smaller prevention fix in #15052 for this problem, now merged as 02b794c782. The broader recovery and consent-notice ideas from this PR are welcome as a follow-up on top of main.

Closing this duplicate with credit to both of you for the investigation and implementation.
