ApprovabilityVerdict: Needs Human Approval Macroscope's review found this PR requires human approval — Catalog models without advertised variants no longer receive the previously synthesized Reasoning menu and medium default, which is a user-visible product-default change. The PR also adds catalog lookups/caching and prompt-admission behavior across OpenCode request paths, so the resulting runtime impact should receive human review. @juliusmarminge You want me to do that second P2 or is there anything else you require? |

Taking over this one. I'll resolve conflicts with current main, trim the tests, and cover stale reasoning selections at both chat and text-generation dispatch before pushing to this branch. |

Note Claude Code (Claude Sonnet 5.5) acting on behalf of Bryan I can reproduce #15649 and this PR looks like the right fix for it. Repro on T3 Code 0.1.6 (Linux AppImage), OpenCode CLI 2.1.3: Bryan is happy to test this pre-merge on a Linux desktop build, which the PR description lists as not exercised. big-pickle is a free model, so no paid inference is involved. The check would be: Big Pickle shows no Reasoning menu, the Agent selector is still there, a message goes through, and a thread that already has a saved |
OpenCode 1.x catalog models with no advertised variants showed an invented Reasoning menu and could persist a
mediumselection that OpenCode rejects. Use only advertised variants for catalog descriptors, and omit a persisted variant at dispatch only when the current catalog confirms it is unsupported. The same normalization now covers ordinary chat prompts, native commands, and text generation (titles, commit/PR content, branch names, and review guides). Supported variants remain intact. Unknown models and unavailable or timed-out inventories retain explicit selections; requests without a variant avoid the catalog lookup. Agent options remain available. Successful support results are reused per session and model for the adapter session, retaining only variant names; failed lookups retry. External server catalog changes become visible after the adapter session reopens. Text generation remains uncached.
Maintainer takeover of #19000, originally by @AbdulSCSkeu. Preserved the contributor commits and merged main. Reduced 16 added cases to 10 focused regressions, including the previously missing text-generation boundary. Fixes #15649.
Verification: 102/102 focused tests passed across status, adapter, and text generation (previously 99 passed with the new text-generation regression failing). Package typecheck, formatting, and scoped lint pass, with the existing unused
layerwarning. The real SDK HTTP fixture proof verifies unsupported variants are omitted and supported variants retained; the unsupported case failed before the fix. Round 1 found costly per-turn full-catalog reads; round 2 found expiry still repeated that cost and a steering/Stop race during initial admission. Session-lifetime reuse and serialized admissions address both; the third full-diff Opus/Sol round found no blocking code findings. The real OpenCode 1.18.18 cache proof made one catalog request across two resolutions (2,693 ms then 1 ms), with no inference. The lookup now allows ten seconds for cold starts; failed lookups stay uncached. Steering waits for initial admission before replacing its cancellation controller.
The shared server paths cover web, mobile, desktop, and local/remote clients. OpenCode 2 behavior and fallback custom-model descriptors are unchanged. macOS, Windows, iOS, Android, and Electron desktop were not exercised during this headless Linux takeover. The Browser panel cannot start because this host lacks Chromium system libraries, so current-head picker screenshots and browser interaction remain unverified. No paid inference was sent.
