fix(web): preserve thread mentions in question answers - #18255
jackroberts236 wants to merge 6 commits into
Conversation
ApprovabilityVerdict: Approved at Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — Thread mentions in question answers now retain their chips while sending a self-contained thread link instead of modifying the ordinary draft. The change is limited to explicitly selected references and does not broaden access or automatically attach thread history. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Learn more. |

Collect and parse thread links packages/shared/src/threadLinks.ts, packages/shared/src/threadLinks.test.ts, apps/web/src/composer-editor-mentions.ts, apps/web/src/composer-rich-text-doc.ts |
The shared link collector returns valid Markdown links outside code with their labels, sources, and ranges. Opt-in answer-link parsing creates thread context-reference tokens, and document construction forwards the option. |
Carry answer-link mode through editor operations apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts, apps/web/src/components/ComposerPromptEditorTiptap.tsx |
Cursor conversion and prompt-end state functions accept the answer-link option. The editor forwards it through parsing, document updates, snapshots, and cursor handling. |
Insert and retain references in answers apps/web/src/components/chat/ChatComposer.tsx, apps/web/src/components/chat/composerThreadReference.ts, apps/web/src/components/chat/composerThreadReference.browser.test.ts, docs/user/question-attachments.md |
ChatComposer inserts thread links into pending answers and derives context records from those links. Pending-answer callbacks receive the question ID and answer text; cursor state remains local. Browser tests cover reference editing and serialization, and the user instructions describe thread selection in custom answers. |

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The relevant sensitive outcome is an agent reading another thread’s durable state and timeline within its connected environment. The new answer flow can supply the target ID, but the inspected comparison does not establish new credentials, cross-environment authority, or broader tool permissions.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
- inferred — A pasted schema-valid link can become a navigable answer reference without picker membership validation. This does not establish a new authorization bypass: custom answers already transported arbitrary text at the base, and tool reads use the pre-existing capability and target-loading policy. Authenticated route enforcement remains incompletely inspected.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The parser recognizes the specific t3-thread protocol, validates ThreadId shape, preserves the written ID, and skips code spans and fences. Link formatting removes Markdown-sensitive label characters. These are syntax and presentation controls, not ownership authorization.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — The pending-answer send branch exits before ordinary provider-turn dispatch, preventing ordinary-draft context records from being inherited by the answer. Failed pending responses retain their request-scoped drafts rather than discarding user input.

Additional GPT-6 Astra minimality review requested by the author, performed sequentially with PR #16971 using native Codex read-only agent Verdict: APPROVE — already a small practical fix. Actual GitHub/local HEAD reviewed: The answer-specific link and conditional context write are both needed to retain usable thread identity without contaminating the ordinary draft. The 14-line helper reuses existing formatters and connects the regression test to the production formatting decision; inlining would only relocate the logic. Skipping ordinary-draft synchronization and removing eager parent refocus address separate stale-state paths. The tests cover answer and ordinary-message behavior; the short docs addition explains the identity-only link. No wire expansion or unnecessary machinery was found. Optional cleanup only: the composer callback signature and its two call sites still carry three cursor arguments that the parent no longer consumes. Removing those arguments would tidy the interface, but is not a correctness finding or a required reduction in this fix. The composer's own cursor calculations and deferred focus must remain. No code revision was made for this optional note. Astra inspected actual source/tests, repository guidance, issue/maintainer comments and published validation records. Evidence assets were confirmed present; screenshots/video were not independently replayed. This was code review, not another test/build run. No servers, browser, builds, tests or additional agents were launched by the reviewer. Existing Docker/browser and final Opus evidence remain applicable to the unchanged HEAD. |

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot 1d4c43d adds answer-only thread chips and changes cursor mapping, but the posted captures and test results cover the earlier plain-link implementation. Please add current before/after images, a short recording of selecting, editing and deleting the chip, and the focused test results required by verification. I'm moving this to draft; mark it ready once that evidence is added. |

Selecting a thread with Tab in a question answer could lose the insertion and move the caret into stale text. It also saved thread context to the ordinary draft, which the answer request never sends.
This preserves the normal thread chip while editing an answer and sends its exact thread ID as a self-contained link in answer text. It reuses the existing chip, cursor and deletion paths with answer-local display records. Ordinary mentions and raw links retain their existing behavior.
Fixes #18233. Follows the maintainer triage.

This replaces the earlier raw-Markdown captures and the inadequate 1.75-second clip; earlier approvals cover only their own commits. Captures use a synthetic fixture project. Recording inspection confirms the full sequence in decoded video frames. The current browser pass verified Tab selection, continued typing, revisiting the answer, deleting/reselecting the chip, and an empty ordinary draft. Submitted answer and resolved server answer retain the exact thread ID.

The link provides retrievable identity to agents with T3 Code tools; it does not attach thread history. No live provider retrieval, native Electron/macOS/mobile or separate remote/tunnel pass was performed. Web/desktop share this composer; mobile has no thread picker. Contracts and provider adapters are unchanged. Existing file/skill/PR/terminal answer-context paths remain outside this fix. The UI fixture seeds projections directly; the submission uses the real application command.
Implemented with GPT-6.1 Sol in the Codex harness through T3 Code.
