BrowserProfileReporter sent profile updates to disconnected environments whenever cached server configuration or session state changed, producing repeated failed preview.reportProfiles calls.

Report only to connected, authorized environments with server-browser capability. Skip unchanged report tuples, re-report after reconnect/config changes, and retry eligible failures up to three times per environment and report tuple with increasing delays. Pending completions are invalidated on unmount so they cannot schedule stale reports.

Scope and approval

Split from #17871 following Julius's one-problem review. This PR contains only browser-profile synchronization. Submitted as a focused correction to an existing background reporting path, without changing profile selection or adding a new workflow. The split request is not a claim of implementation approval.

Verification

  • vp test run apps/web/src/browser/BrowserProfileReporter.test.tsx: 7 behavioral tests passed. Coverage includes exhausted retry budgets across multiple environments, fresh budgets for changed settings, late failure after unmount, successful deduplication/reconnect, cached configurations for disconnected environments, interrupted reports without automatic retries, and stale completions across React Strict Mode effect lifecycles.
  • vp run --filter @t3tools/web typecheck: passed.
  • Targeted lint and git diff --check: passed.
  • Integrated client verification was not run in this session.

Split and verified with GPT-6.1-sol in the Codex harness, running in T3 Code. The original fix was authored with Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code.

…e per change

The reporter re-sent profiles to every environment with a cached config whenever any session or config changed, including disconnected ones: 500+ failed requests in one user's traces. It now reports to connected environments when the report or config changed, and retries a failed report.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Forgetting a failed report did not re-run the effect, so it stayed unsent until unrelated state changed. A failure now schedules up to three retries with growing delays, cleared on unmount and reset on disconnect.

🟡 Medium browser/BrowserProfileReporter.tsx:100

An environment that has reached MAX_REPORT_RETRIES is still reported on later shared retry sweeps, so failures from another environment can keep retrying it without bound. reportChanged checks the limit only when scheduling the shared timer, and the failed entry is deleted before the next sweep; enforce the limit per environment before sending, while resetting its retry budget when the report tuple changes.

🟡 Medium browser/BrowserProfileReporter.tsx:59

A report that fails after BrowserProfileReporter unmounts schedules a retry that calls sweep.current() and sends reports using stale connection and settings values. The cleanup clears only a timer that already exists; invalidate sweep.current during cleanup so a late completion cannot trigger another report.

Approvability

Verdict: Would Approve

Macroscope's review found this PR approvable — This is a focused one-file production bug fix that limits browser-profile reports to connected environments and adds bounded retry/deduplication, without schema, default, security, billing, or infrastructure changes. Two unresolved Medium-severity correctness findings concern retry lifecycle and retry-budget behavior and remain separately blocking under repository policy.

Walkthrough

BrowserProfileReporter now reports profiles only to connected environments that support server-browser operation. It skips unchanged reports and retries eligible failures up to three times with increasing delays.

Connected browser profile reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry tracking and lifecycle
apps/web/src/browser/BrowserProfileReporter.tsx
The reporter tracks report snapshots and failure counts per environment. It schedules retries with increasing delays and clears a pending retry timer when unmounted.
Connected environment report sweep
apps/web/src/browser/BrowserProfileReporter.tsx
The reporter skips disconnected or ineligible environments and unchanged reports. It clears failure counts on success, ignores interrupted or superseded failures, retries other failures up to three attempts, and clears tracking for disconnected environments.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reset the retry count for a changed report tuple.

After one environment exhausts its retries, failures.current retains a count above MAX_REPORT_RETRIES. If its config or profiles change while it remains connected, the new tuple gets one report attempt but no retries. Track failures by report tuple, or reset the count when the tuple changes.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Prevent a retry timer from starting after unmount.

Unmount cleanup clears a timer that already exists. If an in-flight report fails after that cleanup, this callback creates a new timer. The timer can then run the retained sweep after unmount. Guard the completion callback with a mounted or generation check. React runs the effect cleanup when it removes the component. (react.dev)

The description says no behavioral test or runtime verification was run for the new reporting, retry, and reconnect logic. Typecheck and lint don't verify those paths. Closing under the verification requirement. Add focused tests or reproducible runtime results covering disconnected environments, reconnects, retries, and interruption, then request reconsideration.
