…othing A limited provider answers a background wake with an empty turn, which completes. That completed wake became the thread's latest run, so the usage-limit recovery sweep stopped seeing the limited run and never armed or resumed it. A completed wake that recorded only the wake itself no longer replaces the limited run as the thread's outcome. The shared helper, the SQL shell and the recovery candidate query apply the same rule. ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This targeted fix changes usage-limit recovery, queue release, automatic resume, server shell state, and client resumability across several production layers. The behavior is well covered by focused tests, but the cross-layer work-gating logic and mirrored SQL/TypeScript rules merit human review. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. The usage-limit check loaded every item of each completed wake run to see whether the wake did any work, decoding megabytes of tool output to read one type while holding the thread dispatch lock. The shared helper also rescanned every item once per wake on each client render. Wake work is now a type-only projection-store read, and the shared helper collects the runs with work in one pass.

The resume button and recovery banner derived the limit classification from the thread projection, which is a bounded, compacted snapshot: the items that prove a background wake did work can fall outside the window. The server shell already applies the work-aware rule, so use its runtime and latest run for the resume selection, the recovery banner, and the inline error suppression.

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot The backend regressions are covered, but this also changes when ChatView shows Resume and the recovery banner. The PR explicitly reports no client check or screenshots. Closing under the verification rule. Please add before/after screenshots and a short recording showing the banner surviving an idle wake and the Resume or Cancel action, then request reconsideration. |
|
Requesting reconsideration: the client check that was missing is now in the description under Client check (web).
One limit, stated in the description too: the thread is fixture data written into an isolated dev database, holding the persisted state from the report (limited run, then a completed wake with only a notification and a notice). So the recording shows the banner present with the idle wake already in the timeline. It does not show a wake arriving live, since that needs a real Claude usage limit. The branch has not changed since it was closed. |
Problem
A Claude thread that hits its usage limit while background subagents are running is never auto-resumed (#16815). The limited provider answers each background wake with an empty turn, and that turn ends as
completed. The completed wake becomes the thread's latest executed run, so:getLimitRecoveryCandidatesno longer returns the thread, and the limited run is never armed or resumed. The first wake lands about 0.5 s after the failure, before the next recovery sweep.Expected: the thread stays Limited and resumes once at the reset, as it does when no wake follows the limited run.
Change
This is option 2 from the triage comment: a later run that did no work does not replace the limited run.
A completed wake run (
workStartedAtis set) whose turn items are onlynotification,checkpointandsystem_noticeis skipped when deciding which run stopped the thread. Once a wake records anything else, such as an assistant reply or a tool call, the provider is working again and the limit is cleared as before. The rule lives in
usageLimitBlockedRun, which the server shell, the web and mobile clients and the orchestrator already share, so the thread status, banner, queue hold, arming and resume all follow from one definition. The rest of the diff keeps the other readers of that rule in agreement:ProjectionStore.ts): the shell query andgetLimitRecoveryCandidatesboth selected "latest executed run, if failed". They now share one join condition: the latest failed run, unless a run that did something ran after it. It starts from the(thread_id, status)index, so threads that never failed skip the run history.Orchestrator.ts): command projections load turn items by type (user_message,error), which cannot show whether a wake did any work. The four limit checks (queue start, queue.resume, arming, thelimit-resumedispatch) now ask the projection store which wake runs recorded work through a type-only read (getWakeRunIdsWithWork); item payloads stay in the store instead of being loaded and decoded.orchestrationV2ThreadError.ts): the shared helper collects the runs with work in one pass instead of rescanning every item per wake, so the clients' repeated per-render calls stay linear in the number of runs and items.ChatView.tsx): the server'smanualContinuationOfRunIdcheck and the web Resume control follow the work-aware rule. The web control reads the server shell's runtime and latest run instead of recomputing from the thread projection, which is a bounded, compacted snapshot whose window can omit the items that prove a wake did work. The recovery banner and the inline limit error read the same shell state. No contract, schema or migration changes.
Not covered
usage_limit, which is option 1 in the triage comment and a separate change.Scope and approval
Bug fix for #16815, labelled
bugand triaged by a maintainer. The triage comment confirms the failure onmainand recommends this direction ("do (2) now"). Neonsy's follow-up asks for the client banner to follow the same rule, which it does here because the clients read the shared helper.I found no open PR for this. #15697 keeps reset times across Claude wake failures in the adapter and #16517 changes snooze wake timing; neither changes which run the recovery sweep selects.
Verification
Focused tests
Two behavior tests, both failing on
mainand passing with the change:ProjectionStore.test.ts, "keeps a usage limit that later wakes did nothing about". A limited run followed by two idle wakes: the SQL shell, the in-memory shell andgetLimitRecoveryCandidatesall still report the limited run. After a wake records an assistant reply, all three clear, and a later idle wake does not bring the old limit back. Onmain:expected 'completed' to equal 'failed'.runtimeLayer.test.ts, "recovers a usage limit after background wakes that were idle / cancelled / answered". Wakes are dispatched through the orchestrator the wayProviderContinuationServicedoes, then completed.limit-armcommand is accepted, nothing is due before the reset, and at the reset thelimit-resumecommand dispatched twice creates exactly one run and one message.completed, is not a candidate, and arming is rejected. With only the
Orchestrator.tschanges reverted, the cancelled case fails with "This thread can no longer be resumed from that run" and the answered case wrongly arms.Plus
ProjectionControlReads.test.ts, "reports only wake runs that recorded work": the type-only probe names the replied wake, not the notification-only wake or a missing run, on both the SQLite and in-memory stores.vp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ProjectionStore.test.ts \ apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/runtimeLayer.test.ts \ apps/server/src/scheduling/Scheduler.integration.test.ts \ apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ShellStream.test.ts \ apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/ThreadSettlementService.test.ts \ packages/client-runtime/src/state/threadExecution.test.ts \ apps/web/src/session-logic.test.ts apps/web/src/components/Sidebar.logic.test.ts \ apps/mobile/src/lib/threadActivity.test.ts apps/mobile/src/features/threads/threadListV2.test.ts10 files, 589 tests pass.

All pass, withtsc --noEmitclean inpackages/shared,apps/serverandapps/web, andvp fmt --check/vp lintclean on the changed files apart from warnings already present.Client check (web)
Added after this PR was closed for lacking one. Web client in a dev server against an isolated state directory (
--home-dirpointed at a temp folder), macOS arm64, headless Chromium at 1280 × 760.The thread is test data written straight into the projection tables with the server stopped. No provider ran. It holds the persisted state from the report: a Claude run that failed with a
usage_limiterror item resetting at 02:00 UTC, followed by one completed wake run (workStartedAtset) whose only items are anotification("Background task failed") and asystem_notice. The same database was opened by both builds. "Before" is this PR's merge base,50647de01; "after" is this branch at8d6b6d8e6.Before (
50647de01): after the idle wake the thread no longer reads Limited in the sidebar, the recovery banner is gone, and there is no Resume control. The limit error is still in the timeline above the wake. After (this PR): the same thread still reads Limited, the banner shows the reset time with Resume at reset and Snooze until reset, and the composer shows Resume thread.
Recording, after: opening the thread, then Resume at reset (the banner switches to Cancel auto-resume), then Cancel auto-resume (it switches back). Both clicks go through the running server, which accepts them for the limited run even though a wake ran after it. MP4
Recording, before: the same thread on the merge base, with no banner or limit controls to act on. MP4
What this does not show: the wake arriving live. The fixture is the state after the wake, so the recording shows the banner present with the idle wake already in the timeline, not the moment it would have disappeared.
Extra checks
tsc --noEmitreports no errors inpackages/shared,apps/server,apps/webandpackages/client-runtime. I also ranvp test run apps/server/src/orchestration-v2once: 1,783 pass and 2 fail, both inAntigravityAdapterV2.test.ts(workspace file confinement). Those two fail the same way on an untouchedupstream/maincheckout on this machine.Query cost: I timed the old and new join conditions with
node:sqliteon a synthetic in-memory database (3,000 threads, 40 runs each with ~1 KB payloads, same indexes as migration 055; 1 in 10 threads has an old failure, 60 end with a limited run and three idle wakes). Median of 7 runs: old 21 ms, new 2 ms. The new plan searchesruns(thread_id, status)andturn_items(run_id, ordinal). This was a standalone script, not the full shell query. Not checked
