fix(server): status refresh no longer pegs CPU in repos with thousands of untracked files - #16771
Conversation
…files The Changes totals copy the git index and run `git add --intent-to-add` over every untracked file on each local status refresh (end of every agent turn, client subscribe). In a repo with ~50k untracked files this pinned a CPU core for seconds per refresh. Past 5,000 untracked files the totals are now reported incomplete, reusing the existing "too many untracked" path. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Measured on 50k untracked files: git add --pathspec-from-file took 26 of 29.5 seconds. Also guard the test against an empty source list. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — The server now applies a hard-coded 5,000-file cutoff that skips temporary-index construction and reports incomplete status/diff information for larger repositories, while smaller repositories remain unchanged. This is a meaningful default production behavior change on an existing request path, despite the focused implementation and regression coverage. You can add or adjust custom eligibility rules. Thread transfer impact✅ Thread transfer remains within every enforced ceiling.
Baseline: Scenario and decoded snapshot size10 historical turns, 5 command tools per turn, 878.9 KiB retained MCP result per historical turn, and a 1.05 MiB retained result in the measured turn.
Updated in place by a trusted workflow. PR artifacts are strictly validated and never executed. |
📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe review diff path now declines to prepare an untracked-file index when it finds more than 5,000 paths. A test covers the resulting status and review preview with 5,001 untracked files. ChangesUntracked Review Diff Limit

Preserve the incomplete-totals state in the Changes row.
When more than 5,000 untracked paths prevent branchChanges from being computed, the status response omits it. GitActionsControl then falls back to workingTree and displays ordinary +/- counts, which exclude the untracked file contents. Return a distinct incomplete-totals state and show it in the Changes row. Keep the fallback for legacy responses.

Brings in 7 upstream commits through pingdotgg#16761, including the status refresh cap for repos with thousands of untracked files (pingdotgg#16771). Merged cleanly. The files both sides changed, GitVcsDriverCore.ts and ChatView.tsx, have independent hunks.

A reverse proxy that adds X-Frame-Options: SAMEORIGIN blanked every HTML render and PDF preview in that setup. Inline HTML and PDF asset responses now carry `frame-ancestors *`, which browsers honour in place of X-Frame-Options. … of untracked files The review diff preview spawned one `git diff --no-index` process per untracked file on every refresh: 500 untracked files took about 4 seconds, 5,000 about 30 (measured with the new test before the fix). Past 500 untracked files, skip their diffs and report the working-tree source as truncated; tracked changes are still shown. Adapted, not cherry-picked: upstream's fix caps the temporary review index its status refresh builds for "Changes" totals (prepareUntrackedReviewIndex, 5,000 files). This fork has no temporary review index and its status refresh never lists untracked files individually, so the same bound goes on the fork's per-file untracked diff loop instead. The cap is 500 rather than upstream's 5,000 because the fork's cost is one process per file: at 5,000 the bound would still allow a ~30 second CPU peg, and the existing 120 KB `ls-files` output cap makes 5,000 nearly unreachable for real paths. Replaces #15779 by @brauliobo, so CI can run on a branch in this repo. Their commit is kept as-is.
Problem
Every status refresh (end of each agent turn, client subscribe) builds the Changes totals by adding all untracked files to a temporary git index.
git add --pathspec-from-filegets much slower as the file count grows. With 50k untracked files, one refresh took about 30 seconds and 83 seconds of CPU. With several threads running, git stays pegged.Fix
Past 5,000 untracked files, skip the indexing and report the totals as incomplete. This reuses the existing "too many untracked files" path: the thread panel omits the Changes totals, and the diff panel shows tracked changes marked truncated. Repos under the limit behave as before.
Verification
GitVcsDriverCore.test.ts: 131 passed.apps/servertypecheck, lint, and format are clean.Original work by @brauliobo with Claude Sonnet 5.5 in #15779. Takeover by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code (T3 Code).
