feat: Codex voice conversations on web, desktop, and mobile - #14865
Replaces #13168, which was closed under the prior-approval rule. The change is rebased directly onto upstream main at 4df84a7d03, with desktop, composer and symbol conflicts resolved, reactivity imports updated for Effect 4.0.1, and the lockfile regenerated. The diff is 60 files.
Codex 0.156 shipped voice conversations: you talk to a realtime voice model, it hands coding work to Codex in the thread, and it reads Codex's answer back. T3 Code had no way to do this.
Scope and approval
Closure being addressed: #13168 (comment), which asked for maintainer approval of the direction and scope to be linked.
Julius saw feat: Codex voice conversations on web, desktop, and mobile #13168 on Discord on Sept 22 and replied "cool", then "will think on the UI a bit". That reply is the approval record I have; there is no approval comment on GitHub to link. I read it as a go on the direction with the UI still open, and I'm happy to rework the UI to whatever you land on.
How it works
Audio stays off the T3 socket. The client owns the mic, speaker, and WebRTC peer (oai-events data channel), and audio flows directly between the client and OpenAI. The new provider.voice.session stream RPC carries only the SDP handshake, captions, and lifecycle, so voice costs the same locally, over a relay, or through a tunnel.
The stream is the conversation. Unsubscribing or disconnecting stops the Codex realtime session, so a dropped client can't leave a billed session running.
Server (CodexVoice.ts, CodexAdapterV2). Starts thread/realtime/start with the same V3 WebRTC, client-managed-handoff settings the Codex TUI uses. When a voice turn finishes, its final answer goes back through thread/realtime/appendSpeech; commentary and reasoning are never spoken.
Idle-thread handoffs. Codex starts or steers the delegated turn itself, and that can't be turned off. Steering an active run needs nothing special. On an idle thread V2 has no provider-initiated run, so the adapter interrupts Codex's turn and, once it settles, offers a voice continuation. The request then runs as an ordinary user message. The tradeoff: Codex's own history keeps a stub of the interrupted turn. First-class provider-initiated runs would remove this.
Clients. A shared VoiceModeController in client-runtime handles negotiation, mute, captions, mic/speaker levels, the connect timeout, and teardown. Browsers and react-native-webrtc share the same structural peer API.
Web/desktop. Waveform button in the composer, /voice, F8 (voice.toggle), an unbound voice.toggleMute, command palette actions, and a voice strip with status, meters, mute/stop, and live captions. Captions are ephemeral.
Desktop. Grants mic access to the app origin only, asks macOS on first use, and adds NSMicrophoneUsageDescription and the audio-input entitlement.
Mobile. Adds react-native-webrtc (native rebuild required), Android RECORD_AUDIO, loudspeaker routing, and the same button and strip. Conversations stop on background or when leaving the thread.
Settings and scope. Voice is chosen in Codex provider settings. It's Codex-only (ServerProvider.supportsVoice) and needs a thread whose provider session is running.
Verification
Validation after the latest rebase:
Typechecks passed for contracts, shared, client-runtime, server, web, desktop and mobile.
631 of 632 focused tests passed across 15 files. The remaining desktop artifact test, skips the primary native probe for cross-architecture Windows payloads, also fails on unchanged upstream code on this ARM host.
Changed-file formatting and scoped lint passed.
No new browser, device or spoken round-trip verification was performed during the rebase.
Carried over from #13168, not repeated on this branch:
Codex 0.156's app-server accepts the exact start params.
Installed and launched on desktop and iPhone from a personal build. The recordings above are from that build. A full spoken round trip has not been verified yet.
Done by Claude Opus 5.5 in Claude Code, running in T3 Code.

Walkthrough
This change adds realtime voice conversations for Codex threads. It introduces streaming session contracts and WebRTC handling, adds voice controls to web and mobile clients, and updates server orchestration, provider settings, platform permissions, keybindings, and documentation.
Changes: Codex voice conversations
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Voice contracts and client session controller packages/contracts/*, packages/client-runtime/src/voice-mode/*, packages/client-runtime/src/rpc/client.ts
Adds voice-session schemas and RPC types. The shared controller manages WebRTC negotiation, session state, captions, audio levels, mute, and teardown. Session helpers connect the controller to the streaming RPC and validate provider sessions.
Codex sessions and server handoffs apps/server/src/provider/*, apps/server/src/orchestration-v2/*, apps/server/src/ws.ts, apps/server/src/auth/RpcAuthorization.ts, packages/provider-core/src/server/*
Adds Codex realtime session signaling and voice-turn handling. Interrupted or failed delegated turns can be resubmitted as voice-originated continuations. The server exposes and authorizes the session RPC.
Web controls and availability apps/web/src/voice/*, apps/web/src/components/chat/*, apps/web/src/components/CommandPalette.tsx, apps/web/src/composer-logic.ts, apps/web/src/keybindings.test.ts, packages/shared/src/keybindings.ts, packages/contracts/src/keybindings.ts
Adds provider and thread availability checks, composer and command-palette controls, captions, mute and stop actions, /voice, and the F8 shortcut.
Mobile runtime and controls apps/mobile/src/features/voice-mode/*, apps/mobile/src/features/threads/*, apps/mobile/src/features/voice-input/*, apps/mobile/src/components/ui/AppSymbol.tsx, apps/mobile/app.config.ts, apps/mobile/package.json
Connects the shared controller to native WebRTC and audio routing. Adds thread voice controls, lifecycle handling, captions, and dictation gating. Updates mobile microphone and camera permission configuration.
Desktop permissions and supporting updates apps/desktop/src/window/*, scripts/build-desktop-artifact*, third-party-licenses.config.json, docs/*, apps/server/src/keybindings*
The voice conversation feature appears ready to merge from a code-review standpoint. Voice handoffs are interrupted only when they can be resubmitted. The PR author notes that no real-provider or native/browser voice round trip has been run, which is normal pre-merge validation uncertainty and not a specific defect.
Security Architecture Review
Security architecture risk:🟡 Moderate · up to 7a996
Voice adds a new path from microphone input to coding actions. Authentication and local microphone cleanup provide important controls, but replacing or stopping a conversation does not fully establish consistent ownership and confirmed cleanup across the client and provider.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: The new voice lifecycle does not establish thread-local, failure-safe ownership throughout replacement and cleanup. A runtime-wide active slot replaces any previous conversation, although Codex supports multiple provider threads per session. Replacement changes ownership and awaits provider stop before registering the successor’s finalizer; cleanup discards local ownership and ignores stop failures. Concurrent or interrupted transitions can therefore leave local signaling state inconsistent with provider state. Client microphone and peer cleanup limit the privacy impact, but provider-side termination and recovery remain unconfirmed.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The added authority reaches the selected environment’s provider runtime, thread conversation, spoken coding input and eligible spoken answers. Runtime-wide voice ownership can also affect another conversation sharing that runtime. Cross-tenant or cross-environment reach was not established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The voice RPC requires orchestration:operate under authenticated WebSocket scope enforcement. Provider identity comes from thread records; the caller supplies neither provider credentials nor a native provider thread ID. Realtime notifications are filtered by the active native thread.
observed — Desktop media requests are restricted to the configured application URL, with macOS microphone consent requested when needed. Web capture uses getUserMedia and reports unavailable microphone APIs on insecure remote origins.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Client startup rejects superseded microphone acquisitions, and teardown interrupts signaling, closes the peer, stops microphone tracks and releases media resources. Mobile backgrounding stops voice. These controls constrain the lifecycle concern; silent provider stop failure does not prove continuing capture in the shipped clients.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make the supported ownership scope explicit, use conversation-generation identity for startup and cleanup, and serialize replacement transitions. Preserve an observable stopping or recovery state until provider termination is confirmed, rather than silently forgetting failed cleanup.

The title "feat: Codex voice conversations on web, desktop, and mobile" matches the main change. The diff adds Codex voice conversations across the server, client-runtime, web, desktop, and mobile apps, so the title names the primary feature and the platforms it covers. It uses a conventional commit prefix and is one concise sentence.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template's main sections. Problem is missing: the description does not state the user problem or expected behavior in a sentence or two; it opens with a note about replacing #13168 and jumps to the implementation. Change is covered under "How it works". Scope and approval is present and cites the prior Discord reply as approval evidence, which is a partial approval record rather than an explicit maintainer approval comment. Verification is detailed, with commands, test counts, one known failing test, and what was not verified. The template's evidence requirements for UI changes are addressed by embedded recordings. Overall the description is mostly complete, with a missing explicit Problem section and an approval record that the maintainers may not accept as sufficient.
Resolution
Add an explicit Problem section stating that T3 Code has no way to hold a Codex realtime voice conversation, with expected behavior. Confirm the approval basis with maintainers, since the only record is a Discord reply and no GitHub approval comment exists. Keep the verification notes that describe what was not run.

A replaced conversation's stop can close the successor's realtime session.
Both sessions use the same native thread. Line 266 sends thread/realtime/stop for previous.providerThreadId, and previous is already finished at that point. The successor's thread/realtime/start is sent only after that stop, so this ordering is safe. The finalizer of previous then runs when its stream drains, and stop(previous) returns early because previous.closed is true. No stray stop is sent. The order of these effects is required for correctness, and no test covers a replacement. A later refactor that moves finish after the stop, or that drops the closed check in stop, would end the new conversation. Add a test that starts a second session on the same thread and asserts that exactly one stop is sent, and that the stop comes before the second start.

Do not interrupt voice turns without continuation handling.
makeCodexAdapterV2 accepts continuationRequests as optional. If a caller omits it, a matching voice delegation can still trigger an interrupt, but an interrupted or failed turn will not be resubmitted. The request can be lost. The in-tree provider factories pass the sink, but the exported constructor permits a runtime without it.

Stabilize toggleVoice so the keydown effect does not re-subscribe on every render.
toggleVoice (Line 967) is a new closure on each render. It sits in the dependency array of the effect from Line 1141. The effect therefore removes and re-adds the capture-phase keydown listener on every render of ChatComposer. During streaming, that is every delta.
Wrap toggleVoice with useStableCallback, which this file already uses for the same purpose. Then drop it from the dependency array.
toggleVoice is then stable, so the existing dependency entry no longer triggers re-subscription.
As per path instructions, apps/web/src/**/*.{tsx,css} code must follow docs/internals/web-ui.md. That file asks for useStableCallback where handlers leave a large component.

Also addressed the review-body listener-stability finding in 3352e28: toggleVoice now uses useStableCallback, so it no longer forces the voice keydown effect to re-subscribe on composer renders. Its stable dependency remains listed to satisfy exhaustive-deps lint. The earlier continuation-sink guard and replacement-session request-order regression are still present.
Validation: 168 focused tests passed, followed by check:changed passing format, lint, both knip checks, GraphQL generation, affected typechecks and adjacent tests. Native/browser interaction was not rerun for these changes.
Keep delayed voice handoffs until turn completion.
The voice-session finalizer removes pending handoffs when a session stops or is replaced. If turn/completed arrives afterward, the adapter cannot resubmit the interrupted request. ProviderContinuationService can process an origin: "voice" request without an active voice session.
Retain the handoff until completion. Offer it on the stored provider thread. Register expectSpokenTurn only when the active voice session uses that same thread.

Fixed the retained architecture concern in 37e024a. The adapter already supports one active voice conversation per provider session across its native threads; that replacement behavior is preserved.
Lifecycle transitions now serialize start and cleanup, register cleanup before acquisition, and check conversation identity before stopping. Failed stops retain ownership for retry, warn during finalization, and fail replacement until a stop response or native closed notification confirms termination. Handoff ownership changes inside acquisition, so cancelling a queued start cannot clear the active conversation's owner.
Five Deferred-gated regression cases cover concurrent replacement, overlapping unsubscribe, stop failure/recovery and interruption, including successor SDP routing. The original four cases failed before the fix. check:changed HEAD passed, including 127 adjacent server tests; 46 focused voice/client tests also passed. A fake-provider runtime transcript confirms stop acknowledgement precedes successor start. No real-provider or native/browser interaction was run; the reproduced defect establishes lost provider ownership, not continuing microphone capture.

Codex voice handoffs are interrupted so they can be resubmitted as ordinary
runs. Without a continuation sink the request would be lost, so leave such
turns alone. Also pin the replacement-session ordering: the predecessor is
stopped once, before the successor starts.

Adds Codex voice conversations, microphone/session UI and a new F8 binding across clients. The only claimed approval is a Discord response of “cool” followed by “will think on the UI a bit”; the screenshot was inspected and is an acknowledgment with UI direction still open, rather than explicit approval of the implemented direction and scope.
submission evidence: "That reply is the approval record I have; there is no approval comment on GitHub to link."
Obtain explicit maintainer approval of the voice direction, UI and default shortcut scope, and link it.
