feat(mcp): let agents archive their own thread - #14328

Conversation
Add an archive_thread tool to the t3-code MCP server in a small thread toolkit behind a new "thread" capability. Every credential gets it, as with pull-requests, so all providers can use it. It takes no parameters and dispatches thread.archive for the calling agent's own thread. Provider ingestion skips archived threads. If the thread is archived while the calling turn is running, the rest of that turn is lost: the final message and the session going back to ready. The thread then looks busy even after it is unarchived. A mid-turn call therefore returns scheduled=true and archives once the domain event stream shows the turn ended. It cancels if a new turn starts or the thread is archived or deleted first, and gives up after an hour. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>

archive treats every OrchestrationCommandInvariantError as false, so if the thread is deleted or no longer exists after the shell lookup, archive_thread returns { alreadyArchived: true } even though no archive occurred. Catch only the invariant for an already-archived thread; let the deleted/nonexistent-thread invariant remain an error (wrapped as ThreadArchiveFailedError).

A new turn can be archived while it is still running, leaving it incomplete and busy. After thread.session-set reports activeTurnId: null, the code dispatches thread.archive without an atomic active-turn guard, so a turn queued between the event and dispatch is not protected; make the archive command revalidate that no turn is active when it executes.

133-133: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low valueRepeated mid-turn calls fork duplicate deferred archives.
Each
archive_threadcall during the same active turn forks a newarchiveAfterTurnfiber. Each fiber holds its own domain-event subscription for up to one hour. When the turn ends, every fiber dispatchesthread.archivewith a differentcommandId. The first dispatch archives the thread. Each later dispatch fails withOrchestrationCommandInvariantError, andarchiveswallows that error. The final state is correct, but the duplicate fibers and subscriptions add work and extra commands. An agent can realistically retry the tool, so this case can happen. Keep one pending deferred archive per thread, for example in aMap<ThreadId, Fiber>or aSynchronizedRef<Set<ThreadId>>that the fiber clears when it finishes.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

ApprovabilityVerdict: Not approved Macroscope's review found this PR not approvable — This PR adds and automatically grants all MCP providers a new thread-archiving capability, including deferred asynchronous orchestration that changes production thread lifecycle behavior. The deferred path also has unresolved race and error-classification concerns around concurrent turns and missing threads. Not approved because:

Note This comment is posted by Julius' dot Closing for missing prior approval. Giving every provider an archive tool and deferring it until a turn ends adds an agent workflow. #14329 currently contains the proposal but no maintainer approval. Agents can't archive their own thread when the user asks them to (e.g. "archive this thread when you're done"). This adds an
archive_threadtool to the built-int3-codeMCP server.What changed
threadtoolkit (apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/thread/) with one tool,archive_thread. It takes no parameters and archives the calling agent's own thread by dispatching the existingthread.archivecommand. The thread comes from the MCP credential scope. Calling it on an already-archived thread succeeds withalreadyArchived: true."thread"MCP capability.McpSessionRegistryalways grants it, likepull-requests, so every provider gets the tool (Codex, Claude, Cursor, Grok, OpenCode, Antigravity). The adapters need no changes.client-runtime, so web and mobile show "Archived this thread" instead of the raw tool name. Why the archive is deferred mid-turn
Provider runtime ingestion ignores archived threads. An agent calls this tool during its own turn, so archiving right away drops the rest of that turn: the final assistant message, the turn completion, and the session going back to ready. The thread then shows as running even after it is unarchived. I reproduced this on 0.0.44.
So when the thread has an active turn, the tool returns
scheduled: trueright away, and a fiber in the toolkit layer's scope does the archive later:thread.session-setshows the turn has ended.Tests
apps/server/src/mcp/toolkits/thread/handlers.test.tscovers the capability gate, immediate archive, already archived, a concurrent archive, deferral until the turn ends, and cancellation by a new turn.McpSessionRegistry.test.tschecks the new always-granted capability.I verified the same behaviour end to end as a local patch on a 0.0.44 build, with a Claude agent calling the tool mid-turn.
