Added configurable lifetimes for newly issued managed CA and serving certificates, with defaults of 87,600 and 8,760 hours.
Added a setting to restart MicroShift when certificates approach expiration; it can be disabled to log a warning instead.
Bug Fixes
Certificate renewal now respects configured lifetimes and certificate validity. Pending renewals past the rotation deadline are not activated when forced restart is enabled.
Documentation
Updated certificate configuration, renewal, status, and restart guidance, including that configuration changes do not alter existing certificates.

Adds certificate validity and restart-policy configuration. Certificate issuance, rotation deadlines, renewal planning, pending activation, and status output use the configured values. Configuration examples and certificate documentation are updated, with tests covering policy validation and behavior.
Adds serving and CA validity settings and an expiration-imminent restart policy. Configuration loading and validation use these settings. Examples and documentation describe their defaults and behavior.
Certificate issuance and rotation deadlines pkg/cmd/init.go, pkg/util/cryptomaterial/certchains/*, pkg/cmd/init_test.go, pkg/cmd/certs_config_test.go
Certificate initialization uses configured lifetimes. Regeneration evaluates inventory status. Rotation deadlines derive from each certificate’s validity period and rotation policy.
The rotation watcher cancels the service at the deadline only when forced restart is enabled; otherwise, it logs a warning. Pending activation checks the deadline under the same policy.
Renewal planning and status output pkg/cmd/certs.go, pkg/cmd/certs_renew.go, pkg/cmd/certs_transaction.go, pkg/cmd/certs*_test.go, test/suites/standard2/cert-*.robot, test/suites/standard2/validate-certificate-rotation.robot, docs/user/howto_certificates.md
Renewal planning applies the restart policy to retained CA deadlines. Status output reports configured validity and restart settings. Tests cover renewal, configuration errors, and status output.

Custom certificate lifetime settings can be ignored when adding nodes, and renewals can produce inconsistent expiry schedules; these issues should be fixed before merge.

Full details: Test Structure And Quality
Explanation
PASS: The pull request adds or changes Go testing tests using testify and Robot suites. The changed test files contain no Ginkgo imports or It, BeforeEach, AfterEach, Eventually, Consistently, or ote.Informing blocks. Therefore, the Ginkgo-specific quality requirements do not apply.
Full details: Microshift Test Compatibility
Explanation
The check is not applicable. The pull request adds standard Go Test... unit/integration tests and Robot tests, but no new Ginkgo It, Describe, Context, or When tests. No MicroShift-incompatible Ginkgo test needs review.
Full details: Single Node Openshift (Sno) Test Compatibility
Explanation
No new Ginkgo e2e tests were added. The changed tests use standard Go testing with testify, or Robot Framework in test/suites/standard2; the diff contains no Ginkgo It, Describe, Context, or When declarations and no SNO-relevant multi-node assumptions.
Full details: Topology-Aware Scheduling Compatibility
Explanation
The pull request does not add or modify deployment manifests, operators, controllers, or scheduling configuration. The changed files are certificate configuration, certificate lifecycle code, documentation, and tests. The reviewed diff contains no anti-affinity, topology spread, replica, node selector/affinity, toleration, or PDB changes. The topology-aware scheduling check is therefore not applicable.
Full details: Ote Binary Stdout Contract
Explanation
No OTE stdout contract violation is introduced. The changed Go files add no writes in main(), init(), TestMain(), BeforeSuite(), AfterSuite(), SynchronizedBeforeSuite(), or RunSpecs() setup. The new fmt.Fprintf writes certificate status through an injected io.Writer during command execution. The new klog calls run in certificate rotation and renewal runtime paths, not process-level test setup. The MicroShift main entrypoint and its stdout stream wiring are unchanged.
Full details: Ipv6 And Disconnected Network Test Compatibility
Explanation
PASS: The pull request adds Go tests and Robot Framework tests, not new Ginkgo e2e tests. The changed test files contain no new Ginkgo It, Describe, Context, or When tests. Therefore this check does not apply.
Full details: No-Weak-Crypto
Explanation
No weak-crypto usage was introduced. The PR-added code contains no MD5, SHA-1, DES, 3DES, RC4, Blowfish, or ECB references, and it adds no custom cryptographic implementation. The certificate changes use existing x509/library-go certificate APIs. The SHA-256 configuration hash in pkg/cmd/certs_pending.go already existed before this PR. Added bytes.Equal usage is test-only certificate-byte comparison, not secret or token authentication.
Full details: Container-Privileges
Explanation
No changed container or Kubernetes manifest introduces a privileged setting. The PR diff contains no privileged, hostPID, hostNetwork, hostIPC, SYS_ADMIN, or allowPrivilegeEscalation entries. The changed YAML and JSON files only add certificate application configuration.
Full details: No-Sensitive-Data-In-Logs
Explanation
No sensitive-data logging was introduced. The new runtime logs in pkg/cmd/run.go are static certificate-rotation messages. The changed certchains log still reports only managed certificate paths and rotation times, which it logged before. The new certificates configuration contains only durations and a boolean, and no passwords, tokens, API keys, PII, customer data, or hostnames.
Full details: Stable And Deterministic Test Names
Explanation
The prior failure remains unresolved. pkg/cmd/certs_config_test.go:23 still uses t.Run(policy.ServingDuration().String(), ...), so the subtest title is runtime-derived (8760h or 1008h). The title changes when certificate defaults or test policy values change. Other added test titles use static names.
Resolution
Replace the duration-derived title with explicit static names such as default validity and custom validity. Keep duration values in the test data and assertions, not in the test title.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 11.63% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 43 functions across 21 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Mapping this PR against our QE test plan, I reviewed TestPlanRenewal and TestRotationDeadlineUsesEncodedLifetimeAndPolicy but have a few open questions about end-to-end lifetime verification:
Configured value → issued cert. Is there a test that sets a custom caValidity/servingValidity, triggers renewal, and asserts the resulting certificate's notAfter matches the configured duration (not just that planning computes the right target date)?
Descendant capping. Per this PR's own howto_certificates.md update, "every newly issued descendant is bounded by its signing chain" and expiry can be "shorter when capped by an existing CA." Is that cap actually exercised in a test — e.g., a servingValidity long enough to exceed the signing CA's remaining lifetime — or only the uncapped/normal case?
Config constraint enforcement. The same doc update states caValidity must be strictly greater than servingValidity, and both must be positive. Is rejection of an invalid combination (e.g., caValidity <= servingValidity, zero/negative duration) tested at config-validation time, or only assumed?
Midnight alignment. The doc also states expiry "aligns to midnight on the next day plus the configured duration." Is that alignment behavior itself asserted anywhere, or just the duration math?
If these are covered elsewhere and I missed them, pointers would help close this out. If not, happy to help scope QE-authored tests for the gaps.

Do not reject an administrator-owned symlink for DataDir.
Pending() calls validatePaths() before startup recovery. validatePaths() uses os.Lstat on t.DataDir, so an existing symlink at /var/lib/microshift is rejected even when it targets a directory. RunMicroshift performs recovery before normal data-directory initialization, so this can prevent startup for deployments that place the data directory on another volume through a symlink.
Keep the directory-type check for DataDir, but use os.Stat for that path and reserve os.Lstat validation for transaction-owned paths.

Add servingValidity, caValidity, and forceRestartOnExpirationImminent settings with defaults, drop-in merging, and field-specific validation. Apply configured lifetimes to newly issued and renewed serving certificates and CAs while bounding descendants by their signing chains.
Derive startup regeneration and runtime rotation thresholds from encoded certificate lifetimes and explicit inventory policies. Allow the critical expiry threshold to log a warning without stopping MicroShift, while retaining normal startup regeneration.
Preserve online renewal preparation and activation at the next startup. Include validity settings in pending-generation hashes without invalidating renewal for restart-policy changes. Report configured policy in certificate status and document that the running service reads its policy at startup rather than hot-reloading configuration.
Update generated configuration and schema, user documentation, and Go and Robot coverage for custom lifetimes, issuer bounds, restart policy, pending activation, and invalid configuration.

Reuse inventory rotation deadlines based on encoded lifetimes and policy thresholds for runtime restart scheduling and pending-renewal validation.
Honor forceRestartOnExpirationImminent during renewal planning and activation. Warn-only mode permits valid certificates beyond the rotation threshold without bypassing validity or integrity checks.
Make renewal planning sequential and simplify duration decoding while retaining Kubernetes duration parsing and field-specific errors. Strengthen renewal assertions, cover restart-policy changes in Go and Robot tests, and update certificate documentation.

Pass the configured serving validity to the add-node etcd serving and peer certificates.
add-node issues the etcd serving and peer certificates with the fixed cryptomaterial.ShortLivedCertificateValidity. runAddNode calls generateEtcdCertificates(cfg), so a certificates.servingValidity setting does not reach these two certificates. A node added to a cluster with a custom serving validity gets etcd certificates with the default lifetime. If the configured value is longer, these certificates expire earlier than the operator set.
ServingDuration() returns the configured value and falls back to the default when unset, so clusters that use the default keep their current behavior.
The managed init path wraps configured serving durations in alignValidity (pkg/cmd/init.go:294). This change does not add that alignment. Confirm that an unaligned lifetime is intended for add-node certificates.
The client certificate at pkg/cmd/addnode.go:361 is unchanged. The inspected configuration does not show that servingValidity applies to it.

Minor · Align managed renewal expiry with initial issuance. · renewal.go:149-190
Align managed renewal expiry with initial issuance.
Managed renewal uses renewalExpiry(now, validity, parentExpiry), which computes now + validity. Initial managed issuance uses next-midnight alignment plus the configured validity. A reachable renewal therefore produces certificates with a different expiry contract and can shift expiry away from the repository-defined alignment.
Update renewalExpiry to apply the same alignment helper before enforcing parentExpiry.
