Summary

MicroShift's readiness probes for the embedded kubelet, kube-controller-manager, kube-scheduler and storage version migrator poll a health URL once a second for 120 s, but each attempt is an HTTP GET with no bound at all, and the poll cannot return until the attempt does. On the hosts where this was reproduced (perf lab R640s with net.ipv6.conf.all.disable_ipv6=1 in sysctl.conf and IPv6 re-enabled on the NICs, so ::1 is absent from lo and connects to it are never answered) the kubelet probe's first GET ran before the kubelet bound 127.0.0.1:10248: the IPv4 connect was refused, Go's dual-stack dialer fell back to ::1, and that connect sat in SYN-SENT for the kernel's retry schedule, about two minutes. The budget expired underneath it and MicroShift stopped itself with "kubelet failed to start" on every start.

This gives the probe's transport a dialer with a 5 s timeout. Name resolution and the TCP connect of each dial are now bounded, so a stalled dial returns after its budget and the next poll can reach the listener. The TLS handshake and the HTTP response are not bounded, so slow post-connect work is still accepted. URL and address-family selection are unchanged (a user-supplied kubelet.healthzBindAddress: "::1" keeps working). The budget-expiry warning names the URL, the attempt count and the last error so this failure mode is visible in the journal. The same file already bounds the route controller's TCP probe at 1 s.

Behaviour change to be aware of: a host that cannot resolve localhost and connect to the local listener within 5 s now has that dial retried instead of waited for, and with several addresses per family later ones may not be tried within one dial. Resolution of localhost comes from /etc/hosts on a stock host.

Validation

  • Unit tests: status pass-through, a listener that appears after the first refused attempts, a response slower than the dial timeout (still accepted), and a Linux regression test that runs the probe in a child process against a loopback black hole (a listener with a saturated accept queue). The regression passes with the patch and fails with the dialer wiring removed; its watchdog bounds the negative-control wait to 20 s.
  • Robot case standard2/readiness-probe-stalled-connect.robot: drops IPv6 packets to the kubelet healthz port, temporarily refuses IPv4 ones, starts MicroShift, requires the refused IPv4 connect and the pending ::1 socket owned by the main PID before lifting the refusal, and requires the same process to reach readiness with no restart. On a 4.22.16 VM the same case fails on the stock binary because readiness arrives from a new PID after a restart, and passes on the patched binary with the original PID and no automatic restart; both runs verify firewall cleanup.
  • Product binary built from the 4.22.16 source with this change, on a VM with ::1 removed from lo and the ::1 SYN black-holed: the stock build fails at 131 s and restarts; the patched build reports kubelet ready 5 s after "Started kubelet", unit active, no restart. Healthy restart, cold boot and the healthzBindAddress: "::1" override report readiness in 1 s, as before.
  • gofmt and go vet clean on the changed packages, robocop clean. Local make verify-go is not green because of formatting drift in untouched vendored files with the workstation's newer Go; the changed files are clean. The pinned-toolchain lint and the full suites run in CI.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Readiness checks can recover from stalled connection attempts, allowing the system to become ready without a restart.
    • DNS resolution and connection setup for each readiness request are limited to five seconds, helping prevent unresponsive endpoints from stalling checks.
    • Timeout warnings now report the number of polling attempts and the most recent request error.

Walkthrough

RetryGet now limits DNS resolution and TCP connection setup to five seconds per request. It tracks polling attempts and the latest request error. Tests cover HTTP responses, stalled connections, and MicroShift readiness.

Changes

RetryGet readiness polling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bound dialing and report deadline details
pkg/util/net.go
RetryGet applies a five-second dial timeout and includes the endpoint, attempt count, and latest request error in deadline warnings.
Test RetryGet response and timing behavior
pkg/util/retryget_test.go
Tests cover returned statuses, a listener that starts later, and a response delayed beyond the dial timeout.
Test stalled readiness connections
pkg/util/retryget_linux_test.go, test/suites/standard2/readiness-probe-stalled-connect.robot
Linux tests check that a black-holed connection is bounded. The Robot Framework test checks readiness recovery in the same MicroShift process while IPv6 connects remain stalled.

Handle the errors from cleanup and result output.

The cleanup callbacks discard Close errors. The child also discards the fmt.Printf error, which can hide why it produced no result line. Report cleanup errors with t.Errorf, and fail the child if it cannot write its result.

As per path instructions, “Never ignore error returns.”

The readiness probes for the embedded kubelet, kube-controller-manager,
kube-scheduler and storage version migrator poll a health URL once a
second for 120 s, but each attempt is an HTTP GET with no bound, and the
poll cannot return until the attempt does.

On hosts without a usable IPv6 loopback the kubelet probe's first GET
can run before the kubelet binds its listener: the 127.0.0.1 connect is
refused, Go's dual-stack dialer falls back to ::1, and that connect sits
in SYN-SENT for the kernel's retry schedule, about two minutes. The
budget expires underneath it and MicroShift stops itself with "kubelet
failed to start" on every start.

Give the probe's transport a dialer with a 5 s timeout. Dials that
exceed 5 s now return so polling can retry while its budget remains.
TLS and HTTP timeout settings, the URLs and address ordering are
unchanged. Name the URL, attempt count and last error in the
budget-expiry warning.

Add Go and Robot regression tests for a connect that is never answered.
