MongoDB server does not have a free license, it's not packaged under most of Linux distributions for this reason.

Using more industry friendly database, such as mysql, postgres or other similarly wide spread databases, would greatly ease the deployment on baremetal/vps servers, or multi-bot deployment with a single database host.

As it stands now, containerized deployment is the only solution.

MongoDB is used to ease the deployment of those using cloud hosting, as it is free to use the cloud version on their website. At this time, I can not see any transfer to another database system in the foreseeable future.

This has been brought to me multiple times, although we will not be switching away from MongoDB, it is possible we add support for other databases.

@Taaku18 could you create a tracking ticket for alternative FOSS databases? Specifically, I would want to see what needs to be done to potentially help out. Does this project need NoSQL? Can it not be done with for example SQLite or MariaDB/MySQL?

After looking into this a bit, it shouldn't be that hard to replicate the relevant functionality of PyMongo (which seems to be the library thats used) using PostgreSQL JSONb columns. using a database like postgres that supports json would make the migration somewhat easier, since there would not be a need to restructure most things.

How's it going on this? I already have a Postgres instance setup, but I truly don't want to setup Mongo too, since that would lead to me hosting 2 databases instead of 1.

@OoLunar Hey, after numerous (working) attempts of adding SQL support, sadly we decided Postgres will not be coming to this Modmail due to the unoptimizability nature of supporting both MongoDB (NoSQL) and SQL. Therefore in order to use this Modmail, you must create a MongoDB database.

However, a complete rewrite of Modmail with only SQL support is currently in the works. There’s no eta at the moment (don’t expect it anytime soon and asking won’t make it faster).

Unless someone can revise this Modmail to make it compatible with MongoDB without compromising performance, I’ll close this issue and mark as wont-fix as SQL won’t be worked on.
