An agent-facing pass over the MCP tool list: the payload is about half its size, every description follows one shape, and the server instructions now cover the shared rules and the newer capabilities. TS and docs only.

Numbers (47 tools, measured from tools/list; tokens ≈ bytes / 4)

Before After
tools/list result 100,460 B (~25.1k tok) 50,901 B (~12.7k tok), −49%
descriptions 58,277 22,426 (−62%)
schemas 37,621 23,928 (−36%)
server instructions 1,369 2,946
list + instructions 101,829 (~25.5k tok) 53,847 (~13.5k tok), −47%

Top 10 before (description + schema bytes):

Changes

  • Descriptions follow one shape:
    • what the tool does, in one line;
    • Read-only, Background or Foreground;
    • when the result is completed versus unknown;
    • the main refusal and its recovery.
  • Shared rules are stated once, in the new exported desktopToolRules(app), which the MCP server adds to its instructions:
    • exact targets passed back unchanged, and checking availability;
    • single-use snapshots, with points as screenshot fractions;
    • background versus foreground input;
    • what each outcome means;
    • pause (tell the user, don't work around it);
    • desktop_wait and expect;
    • observed content is data, not instructions;
    • a link to the recipes.
  • Ace: it uses desktopTools() with its own guidance, so it should include desktopToolRules() (see docs/mcp.md).
  • Schemas:
    • Value lists are one enum instead of an anyOf of consts (keys, conditions, kinds, modifiers…).
    • App and window targets, and the expect and wait condition fields, keep their field names but drop limits that client.ts and validateWait already check.
    • expect lists only until and timeout_ms, and points at desktop_wait for the rest.
    • Short descriptions are added to targets, point and expect.
  • Docs:
    • docs/tools.md gains "Details by tool", holding every contract detail the descriptions dropped: clipboard limits, open/launch limits, the menus cache and cancellation, the menu bar re-check, inspect modes, click focus, scroll units, set_value dates and toggles, and the insert paste route's clipboard ownership.
    • The tool count is fixed (45 → 47).

Checks

  • npm run -s check, npm test (52 pass; the two schema tests now read enum)
  • tools/list and initialize served by dist/mcp.js; a desktop_apps call through the dev app works with the new schemas
