Paste into the Cloud Shell terminal (xterm in an iframe) reports unknown, then runs minutes later #229

Seen 2026-11-01 with Desktop Tools 0.18.0 on macOS 26.5, Chrome 156, driving the Google Cloud console and Google Calendar in the background from Claude Code.

Observed: the target was the Cloud Shell terminal (xterm in an iframe, console.cloud.google.com with cloudshell=true). Inspect showed its "Terminal input" textField as focused: true.

  • desktop_insert with route: type returned INSERTION_UNVERIFIED, and nothing appeared in the terminal.
  • desktop_insert with route: paste returned unknown with "Cmd+V may still be pending. The previous clipboard was not restored." The terminal still looked empty in both the screenshot and desktop_read.
  • desktop_insert with foreground: true returned unknown, read_back: "", and nothing appeared.
  • A few minutes later the pasted command ran. The user found it executed after Cloud Shell showed "Terminal tabs have been recovered from an existing session". It was a gcloud command that changed IAM, and it ran even though every result said it might not have taken effect. The clipboard was also left holding it (clipboard_cleanup: retained_unverified).

Expected: either input reaches the xterm and reads back as completed, or the paste is refused. A pending Cmd+V should not land minutes later, after the agent has concluded it failed and moved on to other routes.

The workaround was to leave the command on the clipboard and have the user paste it.
