Summary

Voiceovers recorded while the timeline skips trimmed sections are stored as a continuous take. This causes the voiceover to play through sections that are absent from the rendered video and drift out of sync afterward.

Changes

  • Capture the trim and playback-speed map when recording starts and persist it with the live voiceover.
  • Use that recording clock across playback, export, transcription, track re-anchoring, and generated-audio insertion.
  • Preserve the measured timeline span, falling back to the recording duration when the playhead does not advance.
  • Map transcript words and timeline cue positions through the captured playback speed so text stays aligned and the correct word is selected.
  • Keep existing tracks without the optional map on their current playback path.

Tests

  • npm test -- --exclude .github/scripts/stable-release-notes.test.mjs — 338 test files and 4,786 tests passed; 8 skipped.
  • Changed-file Biome checks, both TypeScript checks, npm run build-vite, and git diff --check passed.

Known limitations

  • Four tests in .github/scripts/stable-release-notes.test.mjs fail on the clean base as well and were excluded from the passing full-suite run.
  • npm run lint reports 148 existing repository-wide formatting diagnostics on both the base and this branch. Changed-file formatting and lint checks pass.
  • A desktop Electron preview/export smoke test was not available in this environment.
  • The upstream CI and diagnostic-artifact workflows remain action_required for this fork PR. Rerunning them returned Must have admin rights to Repository.

Issue

Fixes #1195

#1195

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Voiceover recordings stay aligned with timeline playback across trimmed sections and speed-adjusted regions. Recording duration and placement reflect the audio heard during recording.
    • Cutting or inserting audio in a recorded take preserves source timing and alignment.

📝 Walkthrough

Voiceover recordings now store the raw timeline interval and playback map captured at recording time. Playback, track anchoring, head cuts, transcript placement, mix output, and generated-audio insertion use mapped source positions to account for removed spans and speed regions.

Changes: Voiceover playback mapping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture and store recording playback map
src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.tsx, src/lib/ai-edition/schema/index.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/store/*, src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/playback-time.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/document/timeline.ts, related tests
Recording captures the raw start and end positions, intersecting removed spans, and speed regions. Track creation and schema parsing retain the optional map.
Map recorded source time during playback
src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/take-programme.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/aggregated-transcript.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/*test.ts, src/native/sceneDescription.test.ts
Recorded takes split at cut and speed boundaries. Captured removed spans do not advance source time. Transcript placement and mix output use the resulting source and raw spans.
Preserve source timing across track operations
src/lib/ai-edition/document/audioTracks.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/document/audioTracks.test.ts
Anchoring, continuity checks, and head cuts use mapped source positions for recorded tracks. Tests cover fragment offsets, re-anchoring, and head cuts.
Insert generated audio into mapped takes
src/lib/ai-edition/document/insertionTrack.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/document/insertionTrack.test.ts
Insertion maps file time across playable take pieces and uses the matched source time for the right-hand take. The generated track has no recording playback map.

🟡 Minor · Apply the inverse speed mapping when finding a cue word. · aggregated-transcript.ts:413

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply the inverse speed mapping when finding a cue word.

When a recorded voiceover has a speed-adjusted piece, voiceoverPlacements now gives that piece different raw and source spans. findCueWordId still adds the raw offset directly to sourceStartSec. For a raw span of 2–6 and source span of 2–4, raw second 4 belongs to source second 3, but this calculation selects source second 4. Use the placement’s raw and source endpoints to convert rawSec before matching words; retain the linear fallback for placements without an explicit raw end.

Thanks for digging into this: the drift is real, and your diagnosis of why it happens is right. We'd like to fix it with a different model, though, and not through a snapshot stored on the track.

What we want

  1. Record against the uncut ruler. While a voiceover is being recorded, playback ignores cuts and speed regions. It plays the raw timeline continuously at 1x, so what the user says lines up with the picture exactly as it was recorded.
  2. Place the take as an ordinary audio pill. When recording stops, the take goes on the audio lane at the playhead where it started, like any imported track, with no extra state.
  3. From then on it follows the same rules as every other pill. Cuts and speed regions apply to it exactly as they apply to the other tracks. If the user changes a cut later, the voiceover reacts like everything else, and nothing depends on what the timeline looked like at recording time.

Why not recordingPlaybackMap

  • It is state the user cannot see. The track keeps the cuts and speeds of the moment it was recorded, so editing the cuts afterwards gives a result nothing in the UI explains. We avoid controls and state that change the output invisibly.
  • It adds a permanent field to the project format for one recording path, and every reader of the document (playback, export, transcription, insertion) has to know about it.
  • The MCP tools (getCurrentDocument, addAudio, setAudio) cannot read or write it, so an agent editing the project would see one thing while the export does another. Whatever the fix, the resulting track has to be fully visible and editable through those tools, like any other audio track.

Scope

  • The change should mostly be in the voiceover recording flow (NewEditorShell.tsx): play through cuts and speed while recording, then add the track with the existing addAudioTrack.
  • The programme-time / take-programme / aggregated-transcript / sceneDescription changes and the schema field should not be needed.
  • Please add a test showing that a take recorded across a cut is placed as a plain track, and that a cut made afterwards mutes it like any other track.

Happy to review a reworked version. If you'd rather not, say so and we'll take it from here, crediting you.
