Closes: #1772

Description

The proxy handling added for the Bedrock chat provider never reached the code-index embedder:
BedrockEmbedder builds its own BedrockRuntimeClient with no requestHandler, so behind a
corporate proxy Node resolves DNS locally and indexing fails with ENOTFOUND.

createProxyRoutingRequestHandler is added to src/utils/networkProxy.ts and used by the
embedder. Without a proxy it returns undefined and the client is built exactly as before.

Details worth reviewing:

  • The proxy is chosen per request, not once up front. The SDK resolves its own endpoint —
region, partition (only 2 of the 8 use amazonaws.com), FIPS/dualstack flags, and
AWS_ENDPOINT_URL* / endpoint_url — so the destination is only known once a request has
been built. An earlier revision of this PR tried reconstructing the host up front and got it
wrong; deciding at send time makes NO_PROXY apply to the host actually called, with nothing
guessed. This also matters beyond connectivity: the payload is indexed file content, so a
NO_PROXY entry excluding Bedrock must keep that content off the corporate proxy.
  • keepAlive: true on the proxy agents. Embeddings are sent one request per text, and
NodeHttpHandler uses a supplied agent as-is instead of its own keep-alive defaults, so
without this each embedding would re-establish the tunnel.
  • Both routes are HTTP/1.1. A client whose default handler is NodeHttp2Handler drops to
1.1 once a proxy is configured, including on the direct route. The Bedrock calls here are
unary, and the chat provider already tunnels over 1.1.
  • requestTimeout is left at the handler default rather than copied from the chat provider,
    where 0 exists for streaming.

The helper is placed in src/utils/networkProxy.ts rather than in the embedder so the chat
provider — which has the same NO_PROXY gap for its default managed endpoint — can adopt it
later. That change is deliberately left out here, since it would touch
src/api/providers/bedrock.ts while #1718 and #1719 are still open on that file.

Behaviour change worth flagging: someone with a proxy configured whose Bedrock traffic
previously went direct will now be routed through it unless NO_PROXY covers the host.

Test Procedure

  • cd src && npx vitest run utils/__tests__/networkProxy.spec.ts — 45 pass (1 pre-existing
skip), including seven new cases: no handler without a proxy; both agents built with
    keepAlive and handed to the
proxied route; a request routed through the proxy when NO_PROXY does not cover it; routed
directly when it does, including NO_PROXY=* and a request carrying a port; and config
updates and teardown reaching both routes.
  • cd src && npx vitest run services/code-index/embedders/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts — 28 pass,
including two constructor cases: the handler reaches the client and no endpoint is pinned on
it; without a proxy the client keeps its default handler.
  • Mutation-checked by hand: routing every request through the proxy fails three of the new
    tests.
  • cd src && npx vitest run services/code-index/__tests__/service-factory.spec.ts api/providers/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts __tests__/extension.spec.ts — 167 pass; these are the
    remaining importers of networkProxy.ts.
  • tsc --noEmit and eslint --max-warnings=0 clean on all changed files, no new suppressions.
  • Not verified end-to-end against a real corporate proxy. The tests prove the routing decision
and the wiring, not that the tunnel works; I can confirm that on a proxied network later.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Bedrock embedding requests now use the configured system proxy for HTTP and HTTPS connections when available. Requests to destinations excluded by NO_PROXY or no_proxy connect directly, while requests retain their default connection behavior when no system proxy is configured. This supports environments that require proxy routing without changing connections to excluded destinations. Region, credentials, model selection, and other Bedrock settings are unchanged.

The change adds a proxy-routing request handler that routes requests according to NO_PROXY. The Bedrock code-index embedder passes the handler to its client when one is available.

Changes: Bedrock embedder proxy support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add proxy-aware request routing
src/utils/networkProxy.ts, src/utils/__tests__/networkProxy.spec.ts
The factory returns no handler when no system proxy is configured. Otherwise, it creates direct and proxied handlers, routes requests according to NO_PROXY, forwards configuration updates, and destroys both handlers. Tests cover handler creation, routing, configuration updates, and teardown.
Use proxy routing in the Bedrock embedder
src/services/code-index/embedders/bedrock.ts, src/services/code-index/embedders/__tests__/bedrock.spec.ts
The embedder passes the routing handler to the Bedrock client when one is available. Constructor tests cover the configured-handler and no-handler cases.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 7cc6b

Bedrock embedding requests with certain custom endpoints may use a proxy despite a matching NO_PROXY exclusion. The risk is narrow, but the routing behavior should be corrected.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 768c5

The new route makes the configured proxy part of the indexing request path. The code preserves a direct route for excluded destinations, but the confidentiality behavior of a live proxy deployment has not been verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly affected data is text submitted for Bedrock code-index embeddings when that embedder and a proxy are configured. The evidence does not show a new caller capable of choosing the Bedrock destination through indexed text.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — A destination matched by NO_PROXY takes the direct handler; an unmatched destination takes the proxy handler. Unit tests assert both choices, including an AWS hostname and wildcard exclusion.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The proxy URL is selected when the handler is constructed, while NO_PROXY is read when a request is routed. The supplied tests do not establish live-tunnel behavior or the outcome of changing proxy settings on an existing embedder.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For deployments where indexed content must avoid particular proxies, verify the trusted origin of the effective proxy setting and exercise NO_PROXY against a live proxy tunnel before relying on it as a confidentiality control.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR satisfies the coding objective in [#1772]. BedrockEmbedder obtains createProxyRoutingRequestHandler() and passes the returned handler to BedrockRuntimeClient. The handler selects direct or proxy transport per AWS SDK request and applies NO_PROXY to the resolved destination. The handler returns undefined without a configured proxy, so the default client handler remains unchanged. Tests cover handler wiring, both routes, wildcard and port matching, configuration updates, and teardown.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed source adds shared proxy routing and uses it only for the Bedrock code-index embedder. The changed tests verify this implementation. The shared helper supports the linked fix in [#1772]. No unrelated behavior is shown in the reviewed change summary.

Full details: Security Boundaries

Explanation

No changed path meets the security-boundary failure conditions. BedrockEmbedder only supplies the proxy-aware handler to the existing AWS SDK client. networkProxy.ts selects the existing proxy or direct handler per SDK request, honors NO_PROXY, and does not log credentials or request payloads. The HTTPS route uses CONNECT agents, and no changed code executes input or bypasses an approval or allowlist control.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

No changed persistence path exists. The diff only adds proxy routing and request-handler wiring in BedrockEmbedder and networkProxy.ts, plus tests. It does not add or modify persisted state, file/database writes, transactions, rollback, or persisted defaults.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description explains the issue, implementation, design decisions, test procedure, scope, and checklist status. It omits the template's Writing Style checklist item and does not include the optional Additional Notes or Get in Touch sections, but the required information is mostly complete.

Full details: Regression Evidence

Explanation

The prior regression finding remains unresolved. The PR adds ProxyRoutingRequestHandler.httpHandlerConfigs() at src/utils/networkProxy.ts:479-481, and it returns the proxied handler configuration. The focused networkProxy tests cover routing, construction, updates, and teardown, but do not call httpHandlerConfigs() or assert its return value. A wrong proxied/direct delegation would therefore pass the tests.

Resolution

Add a focused networkProxy unit test that gives the proxied inner handler’s httpHandlerConfigs() a sentinel return value, calls createProxyRoutingRequestHandler().httpHandlerConfigs(), and asserts the sentinel is returned and the direct handler is not used.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

The changed Bedrock path can leak HTTP agents. BedrockEmbedder now creates a ProxyRoutingRequestHandler and stores it only inside its private BedrockRuntimeClient (bedrock.ts:21-54). The handler owns both direct and keep-alive proxied NodeHttpHandler instances and exposes destroy() (networkProxy.ts:459-485), but IEmbedder has no disposal method and BedrockEmbedder never calls the client or handler destroy method. CodeIndexManager._recreateServices() clears the old embedder indirectly by dropping _orchestrator and _searchService without disposing it (manager.ts:350-362), and dispose() does not dispose external embedders (manager.ts:297-304). After a Bedrock request, Smithy 4.9.3 uses keep-alive agents by default for the direct handler and the PR explicitly enables keep-alive for proxy agents, so repeated settings restart or manager disposal can retain idle sockets from each old embedder. Validation failure is another path: _recreateServices() creates the embedder, then throws before ownership is established without disposing it (manager.ts:406-419).

Resolution

Add a disposal contract to IEmbedder and implement it in BedrockEmbedder by destroying the BedrockRuntimeClient and its request handler. Dispose the current embedder before replacing services in _recreateServices() and from CodeIndexManager.dispose(). Dispose a newly created embedder when validation fails before service ownership is established. Ensure disposal is safe and idempotent.

Both points addressed in 3ab43c6.

NO_PROXY — correct, and the justification in my original description was wrong. The chat provider cannot rebuild its host because a custom endpoint may be configured; the embedder has none, so bedrock-runtime.<region>.amazonaws.com (.com.cn for cn-*) is unambiguous and is now passed to getSystemProxyUrl. That reconstructed host is only used for the NO_PROXY test — the SDK still resolves the real endpoint itself, so a wrong suffix could only fail to match an exclusion, never misroute a request.

keepAlive — also correct: NodeHttpHandler uses a supplied agent as-is instead of its own keep-alive defaults, so with one request per text each embedding was re-establishing the tunnel. Both agents now get { keepAlive: true }, which restores parity with the non-proxy path.

Tests cover the target host passed to getSystemProxyUrl, the agent options, and a cn-north-1 case; 29 pass.

The finding is correct, and it reaches further than the endpoint override: reconstructing the
host cannot be made reliable here at all.

Verified against the installed @aws-sdk/client-bedrock-runtime@3.1078.0:

  • The endpoint ruleset has four templates — bedrock-runtime and bedrock-runtime-fips, each
over dnsSuffix and dualStackDnsSuffix — selected by AWS_USE_FIPS_ENDPOINT and
    AWS_USE_DUALSTACK_ENDPOINT.
  • Of the eight partitions in @aws-sdk/core's partitions.js, only aws and aws-us-gov use
    amazonaws.com. The others include amazonaws.eu (aws-eusc), c2s.ic.gov,
    sc2s.sgov.gov, cloud.adc-e.uk and csp.hci.ic.gov.
  • getEndpointUrlConfig.js resolves AWS_ENDPOINT_URL_BEDROCK_RUNTIME, then
AWS_ENDPOINT_URL, then endpoint_url from the shared config file — the last of which needs
an async read that the synchronous constructor cannot perform.

Covering all of that means reimplementing the ruleset inside the extension, where it would
drift.

So the reconstruction is removed in f26198b rather than extended: no destination is passed, and
the proxy applies whenever one is configured. src/api/providers/bedrock.ts already declines
the same reconstruction for the same reason ("the AWS SDK resolves it internally, and it varies
by partition"), so the two Bedrock clients now behave alike.

The trade-off is explicit in the PR description: there is no per-host bypass for the embedder.
Restoring one correctly means deciding per request on the resolved destination, which belongs in
src/utils/networkProxy.ts and would cover all three Bedrock clients at once — out of scope
for this fix.

The proxy agents were built with keepAlive, which retains an idle connection
after each request. The client's default handler is NodeHttp2Handler with
disableConcurrentStreams: true, so before this handler existed every request
got an isolated HTTP/2 session that was destroyed on stream close, and nothing
outlived it.

IEmbedder has no disposal contract to reclaim a pooled connection, so drop the
option rather than add a cleanup path with no call site. This also matches
src/api/providers/bedrock.ts, which passes no agent options.

Since these agents are built with no options, https-proxy-agent defaults to keepAlive: false, and Smithy only applies its keep-alive defaults to agents it builds itself. Does each proxied embedding request therefore pay a fresh CONNECT and TLS handshake, while the direct handler keeps its connections alive? If that is intended, could the comment say why? Otherwise { keepAlive: true, maxSockets: 50 } on both agents would match the direct route.

Indeed, the direct route gets Smithy's keepAlive/maxSockets defaults and the proxy agents didn't, so each proxied request paid a new CONNECT + TLS handshake. Both proxy agents now get { keepAlive: true, maxSockets: 50 }, with a comment saying why. Fixed in 7cc6b40.

This asserts only the first argument. If handle dropped requestOptions (abort signal, requestTimeout), would this test still pass? Calling handler.handle(request, { abortSignal }) and asserting both arguments, plus the returned promise, would pin that down.

It would have passed, yes. Both routing tests now call handle(request, { abortSignal, requestTimeout }), assert both arguments on the inner handler, and check the returned promise resolves to the inner handler's response. Dropping the options in handle now fails both tests. Fixed in 7cc6b40.

Smithy applies keepAlive and maxSockets: 50 only to agents it builds itself,
so the direct route already pooled connections while the proxy agents built
with no options paid a fresh CONNECT and TLS handshake per embedding request.
Give both proxy agents the same defaults.

Also pin that handle() forwards the request options (abort signal, request
timeout) and returns the inner handler's promise on both routes.
